Bits of Croatia and a reeeally tiny bit of Italy

Post by Klara » Mon Sep 02, 2019 6:21 pm

I've been on three short trips to Croatia this summer, so I thought I'd post a few pics. These are not places you'd traditionally travel to from far away, like you'd go Dubrovnik or Split, so I thought you might be interested to see them. They're still touristy places, of course.

The first little trip was Higg's last section of the Brighton Pissup. We met in Zagreb, then rented a car the next morning and drove to Rab island. I picked this island basically because it looked the closest to Zagreb. I didn't know anything about it.

I arrived in the evening and did some touristing before Higgs arrived late at night. I've always liked Zagreb and it was such a beautiful evening. Image

The next morning we drove south. We'd rented an apartment somewhere in the middle of the island, so we'd be close to most things. It's a small island anyway, so you're never far away from anything.

Every day we drove and then walked to a different semi wild naturist beach. These places are not crowded because not everyone is willing to walk half an hour through the bushes in blistering heat to get there. The first day we were basically alone at Sahara Beach for a few hours - on a weekend in July.

Every day we had the same meal at the same restaurant at the oldest and the most famous naturist beach in Europe. King Edward and his wife swam naked here in the 30's, apparently.
The view from the restaurant patio was amazing, and so was the food. After dinner we always had a swim at the totally empty beach. The water was incredibly clear and everything was completely quiet. You wouldn't think it was early July in one of the most popular summer destinations in Europe.

Aaand the view:

I like it. I'm always willing to walk to get to someplace if it means less people. What type of food is it?

The next trip was to a little hilltown I'd always waned to see called Motovun. It's in Istria, maybe an hour and a half from whetre I live, but somehow I hadn't see it until this summer. It's famous for truffles and for its film festival.

It looks like this

You can't get to the town itself by car unlesy you're staying there. The people at the parking lot gate under the hill have a list of visitors, and they'll only let you in if you're on the list.

It's a very pretty and very hilly old town with cats walking along the town wall.

I was staying in a small apartment overlooking the valley bellow. The views were quite something.

From the shower:

But the early morning views were the most beautiful from the town walls:

Althought admittedly, the evenings weren't that bad either:

The third trip was to Krk island, where I'd be to many times before, so I didn't take that many pictures.
I was staying in an old village, but I spent most of the days at two naturist camping resorts, so it would have been difficult to take tons of pics anyway.
Krk is the biggest Croatian island and the closest to Slovenia and Italy, so it's very very popular. I still like a lot, though.
This is the Bunculuka Naturist Camping Resort at the end of the island. It's one of my favourite places on the island.

You see naked people hike to little bays like this along the coast all the time.

There's a restaurant in the middle of a vineyard/olive grove close to this little old town that's almost reason enough to visit this island.

And my tuna prosciutto salad at Ulika Grill

And this is at the other naturist camping resort. Generally I like the first one more, but there are some really nice spots along the beach here. You rarely find trees directly on the bach here and since I'm pale, I'm always happy to find a tree I can hide under.

The resort is hidden down there somewhere:

Well this has taken me longer than I thought, so I'll do a tiny bit of Italy tomorrow.

Nice work, Klara.

I dated a naturist once. It was great watching the reactions of the hikers headed the other way on the trail in repressed America.
