The TWA Hotel @ New York's JFK Airport

Post by cummy » Sun Jun 23, 2019 2:31 pm

yes, i was totally transported to 1962, when jetting was just so wonderfully fab. the TWA hotel was designed by famous finnish american architect eero saarinen to be TWA's flight operations center. the building has been amazingly transformed into a beautiful 1962 era hotel - with a whole lot more. i will let the pictures speak for themselves. enjoy...!

Image

this elevator is found in the jet blue JFK terminal 5 baggage claim area. take the elevator up one level to get to the TWA hotel.
Image

you then walk down these long tubes to get to the main part of the hotel ... or to the offshoot elevator banks that take you to the rooms.
Image

this is another tube. one tube is for the saarinen wing, which also leads to T5. the other tube is the hughes wing. each wing is a completely separate building housing the hotel rooms.
Image

here is my "room with a runway view". the glass window panels are like 4 inches thick and block out all airplane noise.
Image

the "hollywood style" bathroom to make you look super fabulous.

Nice photos. Did you steal any TWA memorabilia from the room?

i did not. i did have my speedo with me though! when i took those pics in the early afternoon, the pool area was temporarily closed. why? gale force winds were blowing around the tables and lounge chairs. i later returned in the early evening, and the pool had quite a few swimmers and sunbathers. plus, the hopping pool bar was a-hopping. just our luck ... the power went out again just as we ordered some pricey cocktails. when we were ready to pay, the bartender couldn't use the machine, and could not accept cash ... and so he comped us the pricey cocktails we had. yay. my friend got some twa wings with her fancy cocktail.

ditto for the connie: because there was no power, the bartend staff decided to serve only prosecco - for free! and lots of prosecco we did have.

in the sunken lounge we had some more drinks and some nibbles.

$249 to $349. you can also rent a day room for $149 to $209. note, however, that the runway view rooms are NOT available to rent as a day room.
these prices are actually less than when the hotel first opened. check out the hotel website here to see the various prices.

Yay, so glad they did the right thing when the power went out. Did we ever figure out why the power went out, if it was a hotel issue?

i asked several of the staff. no one seems to know why the power went out. it seemed a bit too hush hush. i even chatted with some staff about the hush hush-ness of the whole situation. all seems a bit sketchy/weird. the hotel was refunding and giving 50% off to a lot of guests. well, i guess they don't want any bad publicity during their opening period.

Thanks for posting the pics! I plan on using the pool as much as possible, though it looks very exposed to the sun.
That's the kind of bold flavor they enjoy in Albuquerque!

Wow. I'm so wanting to earmark funds for this exact trip to NYC.

How much does a weekend quickie to NY cost these days? I'm thinking 1K including airfare, meals, lodging for 2 or 3 nights (double occupancy) sightseeing, taking in the theatre etc.

Mom thinks the real cost is closer to 3K.

Really? For a long weekend? 3K? I fear she may be correct though. Granted NY has always been an extravagance but 3K? * Scratches head *

the thick glass really did keep out the sound of jet engines. i only heard a faint hum when larger aircraft were taking off, and that was only really because i was watching the large aircraft take off. watching those airplanes was a total and complete distraction. it was so hard to get any work done all day.

here is a thread with pics of the other half of my NYC weekend. the second half of the weekend was in manhattan.
