‘A HUNDRED RELIGIONS AND ONLY ONE SAUCE’
“The richer classes have their midday meal at one-thirty in the afternoon and call it “luncheon”. At about half-past four in the afternoon they have a cup of tea and perhaps a piece of bread-and-butter or a slice of cake, which they call “afternoon tea” and they have their evening meal at half-past seven or eight, and call it “dinner”. The others, perhaps ninety percent of the population, have their midday meal somewhat earlier – usually about half-past twelve – and call it “dinner”. They have their main evening meal at about half-past six and call it “tea” and before going to bed they have a light snack – for instance cocoa and bread-and-jam – which they call “supper”. The distinction is regional as well as social. In the North of England, Scotland and Ireland many well-to-do people prefer to follow the working-class time scheme, partly because it fits in better with the working day, and partly, perhaps, from motives of conservation: for our ancestors of a century ago also had their meals at approximately these hours.”

Despite his time "down and out" Orwell was a curious observer of working class life, rather than a participant.

That seems like a LOT of meals and/or snacks.
I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it.

I assume Orwell's description is accurate? I'm not sure whether that is a lot of snacks, quantity-wise, but very peculiar that a snack would have a time slot and a name. Do people actually lay out a table for this 'afternoon tea' and 'supper' thing?

That's a long wait between "dinner" and "tea". I'm also not sure a sugary "supper" would be the best idea for a restful sleep. I guess I'd have to be upper class and not from the north so I could eat something every 3-4 hours.

Re: ‘A HUNDRED RELIGIONS AND ONLY ONE SAUCE’
A gentleman of 2019 would habitually have a double espresso and a piece of fruit or granola at around 9am after cycling to work and call this breakfast.
Lunch, a full hour either at 12, 1 or 2 would involve a falafel wrap or similar food truck delicacy, with a pot of coffee to be sipped upon throughout the afternoon and perhaps a muffin.
Dinner involves a trip to Waitrose at 6pm for a sag aloo pie or other light snack, with an unnamed main meal (supper I guess) of avocado, hummus or beans on toast on returning home at 11.
How did I do? On days off breakfast and lunch join together and dinner is full on excitement with wine.

Breakfast at 8
Lunch at 12-1
Dinner at 5, 6 if lunch was heavy
Supper at 9 or no supper if dinner was big
That’s when I’m traveling and others prepare my meals
At home I eat randomly

Sure, although even the sag aloo, hummus and avocado scoffslurping members of HAMC are probably older than Chi.

Breakfat I at 5, lots of coffee. Yogurt, granola, fresh fruit. Breakfast II at 9:30, a couple of eggs , wilted spinach, with slivered garlic that perpetually stains me, a piece of rye toast or a bagel. Strong mustard, gravlax if if.. Lunch at 1, depends, usually somerhing vegan. After that, nothing but red lentils, unless I'm on a date.
I am Stalking you.

I’ve noticed this. I saw a HA prospect recently and it was notable that he was around 30.NorthernStar wrote: ↑Sun Feb 10, 2019 10:05 pmIn my city, the fully patched bikers tend to run 50+. The youngsters aren’t joiners.
This is the only musical: the mouth. And hopefully the brain attached to the mouth. Right? The brain, more important than the mouth, is the brain. The brain is much more important.

Supper with mum's parents (northern, him originally working class, her respectable, now both very comfortable) was eaten on return from the pub at midnight and was a cup of tea without sugar and a savoury sandwich or toast.

If Voltaire was alive today, he'd be a vicious internet troll to the UKers.
I think that his last words were pretty hardcore, if I remember correctly. Something along the lines of "Now's not the time for making enemies" when asked to renounce the devil.

That sounds better. It was the bread and jam that was making me wrinkle my nose.ben_hanscombe wrote: ↑Mon Feb 11, 2019 5:56 amSupper with mum's parents (northern, him originally working class, her respectable, now both very comfortable) was eaten on return from the pub at midnight and was a cup of tea without sugar and a savoury sandwich or toast.

The 1% don’t eat at food trucks. They eat very plain food like pie and boiled veg, fact. The blander the better as a gesture of white supremacy.

Did anyone write anything Brits consider worth reading after 1950?
