I'm not really a Serena fan, but I believe her when she says she didn't receive coaching (i.e. didn't see it).

Her outrage at being called a cheater seemed genuine to me, though it did get to be too much when she kept demanding an apology.

I also agree that they should just allow coaching.

If she had abused a soccer referee the way she abused the tennis umpire, she'd have been shown a red card. Shame she wasn't.

McEnroe was so cute and funny when he was raging, wasnt he?
Wrong. People think that it's funny now. And he parodies his former rage. It wasn't funny back in the day and he got penalized for it. He was dq'd from the Aussie Open in 1990.
So poor old John got disqualified for mouthing off but Serena only got a game penalty. Must be sexism and possibly racism.

People are calling that cartoon racist. Idiots.
I am wondering how a cartoonist, who traditionally draws caricatures of people, is meant to draw her .

I mean it does genuinly look like her, so what's an artiste meant to do?

Big surprise that Korky jumps in on peak social justice. What a knob.
bigger surprise that no one here had stated the obvious talking points yet. i would rather had not represented this position, but the neanderthals on this forum are about a quarter century behind the media, which has pointed out repeatedly how rarely are these kinds of fines imposed on others who rage at the umpire. you cant even have the debate if you don't lay out the main talking points.

certainly no surprise, however, that misanthrope takes the Angry Negress position. you must love that NON-RACIST Melbourne cartoon, which is definitely NOT RACIST and is NOT depicting a big-lipped ANGRY NEGRESS. not at all.

Probably worked out for the best for Serena.

Martyrdom at the hands of a seemingly privileged official is far more dignified than the clear/cut ass kicking that blasian phenom Naomi Osaka was administering.

Those calls not rare though, especially from that umpire. You don't watch tennis, do you Kork?

And what do you mean by "angry negress"? Those are your words, not mine. He got her spitting the dummy right, in my opinion. He emphasized her features and her petulance. That's what cartoonists do. He did one the other day about Zzzzz Kyrgios - but I bet you didn't see that in your self-righteous rage.

She is a petulant child with a massive ego. And assholes like you will defend her because she sits at the top of the oppression pyramid.

Having a blond tennis player as the winner of the final in the comic was the capper. It looks like something out of the 1920s.

Yep, right out of 1920s - a Negro vs. an Oriental playing for millions of dollars and a PR standing in the culture that will gain them millions and millions more.

Chris Evert said on the air, before all this happened, that Serena was being coached from the stands. Specifically, her coach was telling her to rush the net, which she began doing.

It puts the lie to her denial.

That's the whole point of cartoons, you oaf, to poke fun at people, black, white, gay, straight or whatever. Tony Bliar was always drawn with big ears and teeth, de Gaulle with a huge nose, etc. I suggest you study the history of cartoons.

Nothing to do with racism, just exaggerating certain features as the cartoonist sees fit. Unless, of course, you find Bliar's big ears offensive ...

Strangely the winner was trivialized at the awards ceremony too, because you know who made it all about her.

You were wrong about Osaka - your redoubt is to point out Serena's depiction.

Well, the fans weren’t very classy but I thought Serena was gracious in defeat when the trophy was handed out it. Yes, she stole her spotlight somewhat with her complaints about the ump.

Osaka told what happened at the awards ceremony on the Ellen DeGeneres show today:
Osaka defeated Serena Williams in the 2018 U.S. Open final over the weekend to win her first career Grand Slam title, but it was overshadowed by drama between Williams and the chair umpire. Boos poured down from the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd during the trophy ceremony, leaving Osaka in tears. That's when Williams provided comfort and also told the crowd to show the victor some love.

On Wednesday, Osaka made an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and revealed what Williams told her down on the court:

"She said, like, she was proud of me and that I should know that the crowd wasn't booing at me," Osaka told DeGeneres. "So I was really happy that she said that."

"At the time, I did kind of think they were booing at me 'cause I couldn't tell what was going on because it was just so loud in there, so it was a little bit stressful."

Serena was gracious by necessity. She enabled the crowd. Tennis crowds are like golf crowds. They are usually polite, except for Davis Cup. I've been going to the US Open for decades and I've never seen anything like that. The whole thing started with Williams and than Williams made herself the hero to the champion who's moment she stole.

Her coach said they was cheating. It was obvious she was telling porkies. The coach isn't going to start giving out hand signals without her knowledge and approval.

She isn't the only one doing though. She should have just accepted she got caught and moved on. Her reaction was simply bizarre. To demand an apology from the ref is simply ridiculous.

International tennis referees are not happy with the treatment of Ramos. They are thinking about forming a union and boycotting Serena's matches unless she apologies for her disgraceful behaviour. I say 'Just Do It'.
