Yeah I'm with Vinny on this ,I don't understand what the giant '&" means???

Now,Cowtown, back in the day I struggled to understand a damn thing you wrote...I just couldn't get your shtick but then about a year ago it just clicked and all of a sudden I got the cowtown vibe...an epiphany if you will.

But you are relapsing with shit and it's so bad that you've got me agreeing with the asshole poster known as VinnyD,so pack it the fcuk up and go back to your former glory.

That does indicate how it arose, though. What it was an abbreviation for the Latin word "et" = "and" made by writing an e and putting a line through the bottom bit. That was one way of making abbreviations before we started using periods; another example is the druggists' symbol that you think of as Rx. It's an R, for "recipe" = "gather together, take up", with the right leg crossed.

No question about it, the Stew's ampersand beggars belief. Possibly THE worst ampersand I have ever seen in my life. No, that's an understatement--it's DEFINITELY the worst ampersand of all time. It is an absolute abomination.

The ampersand used to be and still is a short way of writing "and" (in various languages, including Latin, in which it originated). It was never a letter in any alphabet.

Ampersand
Today we just use it for stylistic purposes (and when we’ve run out of space in a text message or tweet), but the ampersand has had a long and storied history in English, and was actually frequently included as a 27th letter of the alphabet as recently as the 19th century.
In fact, it’s because of its placement in the alphabet that it gets its name. Originally, the character was simply called “and” or sometimes “et” (from the Latin word for and, which the ampersand is usually stylistically meant to resemble). However, when teaching children the alphabet, the & was often placed at the end, after Z, and recited as “and per se and,” meaning “and in and of itself” or “and standing on its own.”
So you’d have “w, x, y, z, and, per se, and.” Over time, the last bit morphed into “ampersand,” and it stuck even after we quit teaching it as part of the alphabet.

Jim, the article that that Mental Floss piece cites as its only source never claims that ampersand was ever a letter. Because it wasn't.

The word “ampersand” came many years later when “&” was actually part of the English alphabet. In the early 1800s, school children reciting their ABCs concluded the alphabet with the &.

Right. They also use the phrase "a member of the alphabe". They never say it was a letter, because it wasn't.

I searched for the definition of 'letter', and I didn't find a good definition for it, but I thought it was safe to assume that all members of an alphabet, which & was at one time, could be called 'letters'.

I am not sre I would say the ampersand was ever considered a member of the alphabet. I might say it was usually appended to the end of the alphabet. But if it ever was a member of the alphabet, I would say that the alphabet at that time consisted of twenty-four letters (or however many there then were) and one logogram.

Jim, I already said that the Mental Floss article is based solely on the dictionary.com article, which is careful never to call the ampersand a letter.
I searched for the definition of 'letter', and I didn't find a good definition for it
I suspect that what you mean is "I searched for the definition of 'letter' and I didn't find one under which the ampersand could possibly qualify as a letter." That does not surprise me.

i'm interested in the debate between Vinny and Jim, which started because Lost Soul claimed the ampersand was once a letter in the alphabet.

Vinny is correct -- the Mental Floss article incorrectly includes the ampersand as an example of "letters" that were once in the alphabet but are no longer, and it references another article which never even refers to the ampersand as a "letter"-- it refers to it as a "character". numerals are also characters, but they are not letters. the percent sign is another character, but it is not letter.

the fact that the ampersand was once included on alphabet tables (hence its name -- "and per se and") does not mean it was a letter. we use the word "letter", in this sense, to describe a character that is used to make words (NOT a character that is a substitute for a word), and is associated with phonetic sounds.

the only remaining debate, then, is the definition of "alphabet": does the fact that the ampersand was once included at the end of the alphabetic table that was memorized by school students mean that it was part of the alphabet? or, did the word "alphabet" only refer to the "letters" that are in the English language?

who cares.
