Ideas for New Years Eve in Washington DC

Post by polardude1 » Thu Dec 07, 2017 6:30 pm

Headed down to DC for part of NY's weekend. My understanding is that the mall fire works are no longer happening. For anyone living in DC, what are you best suggestions fo New Years Eve? We're staying in NW DC

Get a nice restaurant reservation on 14th St. for the early part of the evening. Go to the 9:30 Club for the late show.

Sorry, I am old and boring and never really saw much in NYE. Since I will be up overnight smoking meat on 1/1 I probably won't even try to make midnight on NYE, although I am sure the fireworks in the neighborhood will wake me up if I am asleep.

I think they are doing fireworks in old town Alexandria (other side of the potomac). That may be worth a look.

If you're looking to go to dinner, I would make reservations now. Although it may already be too late. Two weeks ago I booked some rez for my family the weekend before Christmas and the pickings were already getting slim.

I hate NYE, by the way. I plan on staying in and cooking with the gf -- so not much help on NYE festivities.

If you're looking for restaurant ideas this is a good place to start:

I was going to suggest the family-friendly First Night/Alexandria, but Not Travel is the first rule of NYE.

Get back on the Metro by 11:30 pm, or otherwise have your transportation set up ahead of time.

Maybe you'll get lucky with taxi/Uber/Lyft.

And remember, a D.C. cab is not allowed to pick up passengers in Virginia.

Not Travel is the first rule of NYE

The one time I flew across the Atlantic on NYE, I had a five-seat center section to stretch out on by myself, as did almost everyone else on the plane.

That was some time ago, but I think it might still be a good time to be in the air.
