College Football Talk 2017
AKA scholars with dollars.
Wasn't going to put one of these up this year, but as it's really starting to heat up now, I thought I would.
"The Committee" has put Georgia ahead of Alabama as their #1 in the rankings the first week out. Every other poll has Alabama #1, where they've been from the beginning.
Here's their current ranking.

Copying LS's post from the NFL thread here.
Interesting. Hadn't heard of this dude.

Speaking of Arizona QBs, they have one this year who came off the bench in game five and is currently in line for the Heisman trophy. Khalil Tate is his name. He was inserted into Game five against Colorado, and promptly broke the all-time NCAA rushing record for rushing by QB- 327 yards.
Then he did the same thing over the next three games. When the opposing teams played him for the run, he threw long bombs into the end zone. He currently averages 13.4 yards per carry and has a QB rating of 187.5. He has now won the PAC-12 player of the week for four weeks in a row for the first time ever. Look for him tomorrow against USC.
Here are the AZ/CO highlights, where he broke the all time rushing record.

It's too bad UA football was so crappy when I was there.

The only three games he started came after that game. Look for UCLA, Cal and Washington State highlights vs AZ.
He's a sophomore, too. If you can get the PAC 12 AZ channel, they are running his games in a near loop. He's a remarkable runner. He's not fast or big, but he jukes and jives better than anybody I've seen since OJ. Of course it won't last, running QBs never do.
The SC game tomorrow is on ESPN, but the kickoff is 10:30 PM EST, from the Coliseum. He's going to break 1000 yards rushing in that, his 5th game, and the all time QB season record either tomorrow or next week in his 6th game.

This is correct. Arizona's MO is to go 7-5, but knock off a top team in a given season.
There was a time in the 90s when they were national powers, however. They had a killer defense and a great coach in Dick Tomey. They would go into a top team like Miami's home and win 6-0. Then the mongs fired Dick Tomey.

Re: College Football Talk 2017
Clarification: Tate is the first player ever to win player of the week four times in a row, in any conference. Six others have won four times, but not in a row.
http://tucson.com/sports/arizonawildcats/football/greg-hansen-mr-football-on-the-best-khalil-in-the/collection_640b7694-c0ea-11e7-a8f8-4bb2eea5cfd7.html#2

Seven have won their conference award four times. Among them: the incomparable Bo Jackson at Auburn in 1985; Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard at Michigan in 1991; Heisman winner Ron Dayne at Wisconsin in 1999; Purdue quarterback Drew Brees in 2000; and Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson in 2011.
That should provide context on what it is Tate has accomplished. No one named Joe Smith has done it.
Most conferences began awarding a player-of-the-week honor in the early 1980s; only two Power 5 offensive players have won five of them: Cam Newton at Auburn in 2010 and Heisman winner Ricky Williams of Texas in 1999. Williams won four times in five weeks, but Tate is the only man to win it four times in a row.

The over/under is an insane 77 1/2 for this offensive dynamo. I've never seen it so high.
Of course having no defense contributes to it, but still.

Re: College Football Talk 2017
I had a wicked awesome Saturday gambling on College Football and the CFL.
Washington State -2.5, the won by 3
USC -7.5, they won by 14
Miami +2, the won by 18
Arizona St - 6.5, they won by 11.
Funny thing about that Arizona St game, I originally made a bet of them - 3.5 earlier in the week, but I didn't write it down, so I forgot that I had made that bet. So I had two bets on 'Zona St, that was a nice little bonus for my account.
In the CFL I had Winnipeg +11, they won straight up, and Toronto -1, they won by 31.
The only game I lost was UCLA +9.5, they lost by 31.
Hopefully I have as good a day tomorrow with my NFL bets.

Nice work, sode.
I watched the Arizona game from the comfort of my La-Z-Boy. I saw the opening kickoff at 6:50 PM, and the highlights on ESPN at 11:05 PM.
Now I will be up all night. Still, it was worth it.

I watched some of the USC/Arizona game late.
It was a good game for a while. Then Ronald Jones seemed to run right through them and put the dagger in.

Since this thread has become Pac-12 talk...
SC is in the driver seat in the South and will face one of the Washington schools for the conference title. I expect SC to have another season-ending surge, Darnell to stay for his junior year, and SC to win the title next year. My father went to USC on a football scholarship in the 1940s.
I'm hoping the Neutered Dames win the title this year. The trophy needs to be above the Mason/Dixon line.

Catholics vs Convicts happening again this weekend.
Interesting to see both Notre Dame (#3) and Miami (#7) up near the top again.
ND's position seems a little more stable than Miami's at the moment. But who knows.

But WHY do you call the University of Miami "convicts"?

The team was full of thugs when Jimmy Johnson was coach. I always assumed The U was a rotten urban school, but the documentary makes clear that it is mostly a rich-kid school for latinos and others.

This is from a famous, controversial t-shirt created by a Notre Dame student back in 1988. ESPN even has a documentary about it (below). But yes, the team was full of hood bros back in Jimmy Johnson's day (and before that even - it really started with Howard Schnellenberger, who was the first coach to go into the hoods of Florida to recruit).

You can see the documentary here, but it has to been distorted in different ways so it won't get flagged on YouTube. You can still see it on ESPN from time to time.

The Convicts crushed the Catholics.
Joja was run through, for old times sake.
And Arizona got 530 yards rushing.

The U looked awesome -- they did everything right. They have speed and talent at all positions. They are good enough to win the National Championship.
Notre Dame played like shit. It was like they didn't come to play. They were slow. They did everything wrong. Awful performance.

I went 3 for 4 on College Football betting this week.
$50/game
I had Auburn +4.5 in the Iron Bowl, and they won straight up.
I had Arizona St +2 in the Territorial Cup, and they won straight up.
I had Stanford +2 against Notre Dame, and they won straight up
My only loss was Washington St +10 in the Apple Cup and they got crushed 41 to 14.

That was the line on the Apple Cup? No way Wazzu was ever going to cover that, Mike Leach or no Mike Leach, in that game.
So winner of the ACC and SEC championship games are probably in the playoff. And if Wisconsin and Oklahoma win their championship games, they're probably in. But if Ohio State and/or TCU win? Who knows what the committee will do. Is Condi still on it.
The only sure thing is that the PAC-12 is out of it. They don't even have the Rose Bowl as a consolation this year.

Yes, championship games next week should be interesting.
If Auburn wins, even though they have 2 losses, they're probably in. They've beaten #1 Georgia and #1 Alabama. Lost to #3 Clemson and a decent LSU team. But there will be a lot of 1-loss teams not getting in.
And then what happens if Ohio State (with 2 losses and sitting at #8 before this week) beats Wisconsin?

I wonder what happens if Ohio State wins and Oklahoma loses. Oklahoma beat Ohio State in Columbus at the beginning of the season. If both Oklahoma and Wisconsin lose, that opens the door for Alabama and...who? Ohio State over Oklahoma? Oklahoma even though they lost? TCU? USC if they win the Pac-12? An undefeated Central Florida? An 8 team playoff with all 5 power conference champions and 3 at larges? Cats and dogs living together?

Yeah, if Wisconsin and Oklahoma both lose, it's going to be a mess.
If Ohio State absolutely crushes Wisconsin, maybe you could consider them. But Wisconsin hasn't really played much of a schedule all year long.
If Georgia and Auburn have a hard fought battle, and Auburn wins, maybe you could consider Georgia, but I don't think the committee would ever put 3 SEC teams in the final 4.
Maybe if Miami wins a hard-fought game over Clemson, Clemson could still be the 4th team in (assuming Miami gets in with a win, which I think they will, even though they haven't always looked strong during some of their wins).
All that said, I think Oklahoma will win their game against TCU, and so the scenario of having to get 2 new teams into the top 4 won't happen.

Lane Kiffin is the Donald Trump of NCAA football.
Alabama deserves to be on the out-and-out, given that they play cupcake non-conference games even in late November (Mercer College). It will be Auburn/Clemson/Oklahoma/Wisconsin if they all win on Saturday. I think THE Ohio State University could take down Wisconsin, however, opening the door for Bama. Why any black kid above the Mason/Dixon line would want to attend Bama, I will never know. I bet northern black kids are taught the Emmett Till Story before they enroll.
SC plays Stanford on Friday. Leeland Standford was a robber baron and a criminal, so SC better win.

I went 1 - 1 - 1 today betting against the spread.
I had Memphis +7, the lost by 7 so bet was a push.
I had Miami +9, they got thumped by about 30 or so, so that was the loss.
I had Wisconsin +7 and they lost by 6, so that was the win.
The teams in the College Football Playoff will be as follows:
1. Clemson
2. Oklahoma
3. Georgia
4. Alabama

This could lead to an all SEC final, which I thought they would have tried to avoid because of the complaining they would hear. But really there's no other possible order if you're being honest.

Good call on the rankings, Sode, horrible on the championship games.
I would've flipped Georgia and Oklahoma but it doesn't make a difference in the matchups.

Great Army/Navy game in the snow.
Army won for the second year in a row.
Before last year, they hadn't won since 2001.
Overall series record favors Navy: 60–51–7.

Other than the tight finish, the game itself was kinda boring. There were maybe 10 passes the whole game, though I realize that had a lot to do with the snow.

Well, there you go.
Even the announcer said something like, "If I do 15 more of these games, I'll always remember this one."

Re: College Football Talk 2017
I had a bet on 6 bowl games today, I went 4 - 1 - 1.
7h
I had 30 on the New Orleans Bowl, Troy -6.5 and they won by 20.
I had 20 on the Las Vegas Bowl, Boise St +7.5 and they won by 10.
I had 10 on the Celebration Bowl, Grambling +7 and they lost by 7 so it was a push.
I had 10 on the New Mexico Bowl, Colorado -5.5, so I lost.
I had 10 on the Auto Nation Bowl, Georgia St +6 and they won by 10.
I had 10 on the RayCom Bowl, Middle Tennessee +3.5 and they won by 5 so I won.

Re: College Football Talk 2017
That's Arizona football.
The good news is that there are 60 Freshmen on the squad, and the QB who threw 5 TDs will be a Junior next year.
It's fun to watch a zero-defense team. Like the San Diego Chargers in the 80s, with Air Coryell and Dan Fouts, and not much else.
BTW, I hope you took some punting tips from our punter. He uses his shin to kick the ball.

I love the half point, I had 30 on Stanford +2.5 against TCU, and Stanford lost by 2, so I won the bet.

That was a good game.
I had Stanford. I'm losing a lot of close ones.

I had 40 on USC +7, and they lost 24 - 7, so no win for me.
