Miss American Pie

Post by ManchVegas » Wed Jul 11, 2018 8:27 pm

Sorry I can't link this better but try and watch this video. It's almost a case study in British - American relations. It was filmed at the BBC in 1972 so the audience is British and their reactions are priceless. Don is singing his heart out and all you see are mostly blank stares. If you don't want to watch the whole thing skip to the 5:00 mark. That woman's expression is so patently British. If I don't get that look at least 3 times when I'm the UK I didn't do it right!

I'm saying this in a light hearted manner BTW. It's funny because comments on the video have been deactivated. Things must have gotten nasty!

Funny, I don't know how successful the song was in the USA but it's been a standard here for ever. Everybody over 30 knows the chorus and probably a couple of verses.

I haven't watched the video, but how are people supposed to look while listening to American Pie? It's hardly a 'woop woop' song.

Again, I'm not trying to stir up a shit storm. It's just a light hearted at look at different cultures. It's funny that the comments were disabled though. Things must have gotten nasty!

OK. Clicked the link, went to the time. There's a shot of 60's studenty types singing along and a glum woman in the middle not singing.
Who would imagine they knew anything about anything from that, let alone get nasty?

Her in the pink shirt? She looks completely engrossed.

The song was quite new in 1972. She's listening.

Sorry, Manch. Could be she doesn't like the song. It is mildly interesting that the director used the shot of such an unenthusiastic audience member.

Half of English women have that blanked out facial expression most of the time.

Even when they're coming.

Like a quarter of them still have that hair do. It really is the haircut museum.

Lol. Sorry. I guess I'm REALLY over analyzing things.

My take is that the British don't know how to deal with raw emotions. Seriously, they really don't. I'm not saying that in a negative way because the American way of walking around like one massive exposed nerve isn't necessarily better. It's just different. But I do think you see that combination of British reserve and American emotion all in one space and I find it interesting.

Her look is one of polite bafflement, of searching for the exact correct response to a situation, so as not to offend. This is a very English self-torment.

Without that knowledge, the song makes no sense.

The belief that the English are chuffed, well chuffed, or otherwise chuffed by Americans is a few decades out of date.

She's just typical English blanked out, dreaming about a topiary bush or some old guy in a powdered wig or other ye olde English-y thing.

Yeah, Maybe she is truly befuddled Lost Soul. That song is peppered with so many Americanisms. I love the line "Helter Skelter in a summer swelter".

I wonder if anyone outside the US even knows about the whole Helter Skelter Manson murder thing? You'd have to be of a certain age even in the US to get that reference.

Rye, in her world, is a type of bread that is definitely undrinkable. Cue the bumfuzzlement.

Interesting Dragon. Do you get most of the references? I think you have to be of a certain age group to fully get it otherwise the song makes no sense.

True Lost Soul. If you really tease apart the song it would be nonsensical to most listeners. I mean "Fallout Shelters"? Do they even have those anymore?

I've heard that they started dismantling them in the US and taking down the signs because they were misleading. The "Fallout Shelter" sign is supposed to be an indication of safe refuge with food and medicine and that's no longer the case.

"Drinking whiskey and rye" never made a lot of sense to me either. Rye is whiskey. It's like saying "eating fruit and apples".

And I don't get "but the levee was dry" either. Levees are supposed to be dry, at least on the landward side, anyway, aren't they? Why were they (apparently) hoping for the levee to be wet when they drove there?

I figured some of them were drinking rye and others were drinking whiskey whiskey, like bourbon. I never really knew what a levee was, just that you don't want them to break.

Yeah. I picture an apocalpytic scene. The levee is bone dry. It's not holding back any water because the water is gone. Similair to a lake that I used to go to as a kid. It had pleasant pavillions. Amusement rides. Hot dog and hamburger stands and something happened and the laked drained and it's now deserted and erie. Last time I went there was a rusting carousel and other amusement rides that I remember going on. It was so fucking depressing.

one more thing, as I beat this topic to death.........Those that are saying I'm reading too much into it. Have you been to the UK? They don't necessarily appreciate a "colorful character" like myself. Some do of course because you really can't generalize but often times I get "the look" because I can come across as a strong personality. In the US people just laugh it off. They think I'm a hoot. That's not always the case across the pond.

Rye is whiskey whiskey, like bourbon. To say "some were drinking rye and some were drinking whiskey" is like saying "Some were eating apples and some were eating fruit."

If you drove to a levee along, say, the Mississippi, climbed up onto the levee, and discovered that the Mississippi river bed was dry, would you describe the situation by saying "The levee was dry"? (Substitute Lake Pontchartrain or another lake or whatever for the Mississippi if you like.) My suspicion is that MacLean liked the sound of "drove my Chevy to the levee" and didn't bother to learn what a levee was.

So it could be that the woman in pink is thinking to herself: "Rye is whiskey, isn't it? And don't you want the side of the levee that you can drive to to be dry? What is everybody talking about?"

Yeah, Korgy. I'm thinking it might be a time warp thing too. 1972 was a long time ago. Maybe the audience was BBC employees and their friends and families? They were told to not act out or be too emotional? There's only one chick that's totally getting into it.

The guy is singing his fuckin' heart out to boot! Even if you think the lyrics are dumb it's still an amazing performance. Just a guy, his voice and a guitar. No back up vocals or flashy light shows.
