You know what made America turn it's back on international competition?

American doughboys dead at the bottom of European trenches.

My city was the Mecca for American Cricket, but mustard gas killed that buzz. So...baseball!

It took a few years for the isolationist streak to really settle in, and American baseball and football players managed to snag two gold medals in Olympic rugby before the turning away was complete.

They have an American football show here on BBC straight after Match of the Day (highlights of the real football) on Saturday nights

Soccer is popular here. Children play it. Women also, they’ve won the World Cup.

I've seen Filipinos playing American Football on an army base here, but nowhere else.

Surprisingly soccer hasn't really caught on here. Due to the prevalence of basketball, I guess. Filipinos would probably do better at soccer.

I don't know why everyone doesn't watch Irish Hurling.

No that Hurling joke isn't funny.

It is the closest thing we have to watching James Caan in Rollerball.

India and Pakistan took to cricket pretty well. The combined population of those two countries would dwarf japan and Korea and yet would anybody other than Lincoln seriously think that crickets popularity is not down to British influence in the region.

I wonder if that’s because it’s so hot and rainy there and you can play indoors.

That's the kind of bold flavor they enjoy in Albuquerque!

....Or Gaelic football or Aussie rules football. Certainly more excitement than American football. My guess it that’s it down to global reach and global appeal. Despite all the bullshit, the World Cup remains by far and away the worlds favourite sporting event.

That would make sense, but most basketball courts here are still uncovered and outdoors. And often on dirt courts.

The weather doesn't seem to affect it

The bottom like is that football is easy to play, it’s fun to play, it’s simple, you don't need any special kit, it’s entertaining and you don’t have to be a freak to play it. The governing body does however need to irradiate gamesmanship but this is true of every sport.

All you need to play football is a tin can.

And jumpers for goalposts.

My dad said growing up in Argentina they played with a rock, in bare feet, but that could just be one of those dad stories.

Korgy is probably referring to the huge grass roots recreational soccer movement that occurred later. It went from fringe to YUGE.
yes, there were no official school teams when i was a kid. we just made up our own games.

Soccer is the most popular recreational sport in the US. If I wanted to, I could play a league match seven nights a week here.

Baseball is great, if you grow up playing it. It's YUGE in countries like Cuba, Venezuela, Panama, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Mexico, Dominican Republic, pretty much all of the non-Commonwealth Caribbean countries.

I played soccer in a rec league with a group of friends for a while here in the Philippines. It was loads of fun, wish they still did it.

I played baseball when I was a kid. Not as much fun. Lots of standing around doing nothing. Or waiting to bat.

American football is a lot of fun to play because you get to Destroy people.

I love baseball, but not because it's particularly athletic. I know all kinds of statistics and lore - there's a century and a half of history there. I read obsessively about baseball when I was like eight and nine years old. I can see how the game would be boring if you didn't know a lot about it though.

American football sucks. I could challenge korgy in my dislike of the game. Basketball sucks too.

It's the other way around for me. I think one of the few things more boring than playing baseball is watching it.

I enjoy American Football but not enough to seek it out, I just watch it if it happens to be on. Playing it is Awesome.

I hate basketball, which Filipinos are completely incredulous about. "Oh you're American!? What is your favorite basketball team!?" is something I get all the time here. If I throw out a team they'll quote the name of every player on the team. If I say I don't follow basketball they look at me like I just slapped them.

I was the kicker in high school football for a while. Eventually they had to drop me, since they hadn't rostered me correctly. Soccer players make good field-goal kickers.

Yeah it’s an odd one - same in Malaysia, everyone loves to watch it, but the teams are crap. In Malaysia the national team has a huge political cloud over it in terms of who gets picked, which is one reason they’re a bit crap, but there are enough fit sportsmen and women in the country - the best female squash player of all time, one of the best male badminton players, etc. And the Philippines can produce Pacman. If someone like 5’6” Modric can be world-class, then the Philippines or Malaysia should be able to produce football legends - plus it starts in the streets - if half of Manila doesn’t resemble a Brazil favela, I don’t know what does.

Yep, it really does. But instead of dirt football pitches with wooden goals like I always saw growing up in Brazil, Manila and the provinces have dirt basketball courts with wooden backboards and rebar hoops. Always found it funny.
