Sick Food

Post by ManchVegas » Wed Jul 11, 2018 2:58 pm

What are your go to sick foods? For me it's Campbell's Chicken Noodle. I prefer it to the gourment brands when I'm not feeling well. There's something about the blandness of it. The top shelf brands are loaded with big chunks of chicken and vegetables and that's actually nauseating when you're sick. The same goes for ice cream. I don't want the fully loaded Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey. A simple plain flavor will do just fine.

So, right now I would like:

Cup of Campbell's soup

Grilled cheese

Dish of chocolate ice cream.

I wonder who's gonna make that for me. Oh wait...I guess that would be me!

Informal pole: Who thinks I'm being a big fat man baby and needs to zip it? I know you guys won't hold back!

Salad, baked potato, fruit. Stuff that yells ‘healthy’ really loudly.

Used to be spicy chicken stew.

These days it's Lugaw, the Filipino version of congee - rice stew with ginger, hard boiled egg, scallions.

I like them a bit spicy, helps clear the sinuses.

I still enjoy being coddled a bit when I'm sick. I don't care if it makes me a man baby.

Yeah, that's the best option DC but it's so off putting right now. I bought a Dole Chopped Salad Kit and I can't even look at it much less eat it.

Mmmm. Wonton soup. I forgot about that. Hot & Sour would gag me but I could tolerate wonton.

Yeah EMG, being coddled would be great. That's one of the worst things about being single.

No, not some ready-meal abomination. Get some fresh salad vegetables. Chuck in some raw chillis, ginger, garlic and onion.

Yeah, that's how I am too. Mostly because no one (except Mom, when I was a kid) ever gets it quite right.

Yeah, Mom's are great like that. I have fond memories of Mom nursing me back to health. She would bring me a meal tray in bed. Just enough food. That's key. You don't want to overwhelm with too much food. It makes you gag.

Soup. My standard go-to is home made Jewish style chicken soup, which cures anything, but any spicy kind is good too, so long as it's based on flavorsome clear broth. No creamy or too chunky. It's impossible to coddle me when I'm ill. No one can do anything right (read: I am an insufferable big baby) except fetch me ingredients for soup, quick smart.

I still haven't made it to the corner store. It's getting close to dinner time and I haven't had a damn thing to eat all day and no one delivers out here. That's an odd concept for most people to wrap their minds around. I'm so remote that there are no delivery services and you must take your trash / rubbish to the landfill yourself! My friend in England thinks I'm making that up.

I'm so craving a good old fashioned grilled cheese made with Wonder Bread and Kraft Singles.

Thanks, I should just do Amazon. They do 2 day prime delivery but they don't do fresh foods like bread, milk, eggs, veggies etc.

No, no one will help me. I can't blame them. When I was working I couldn't have done it for anyone else. I actually have quite a bit of extended family in the area and I've reached out and asked them for help and no one has the time. Again, I can't blame them, if the tables were turned I'm not sure if I could help them.

It sucks that we've gotten to that point as a society. I litterally can't pay any of the younger family members to come out and mow my lawn for example. When I was younger I would have jumped at the opportunity to make a quick 50 bucks. I didn't realize that kids don't do that sort of thing anymore.

Hi Manch. I hate to jump in but I do hope that you have some support system in place. Are there any rural community nursing programs you can enlist for weekly checkups or something? Can you visit the local unemployment bureau to find part time help? I know you are on a fixed income at the moment, but please, I hope that you are thinking in this direction. Having no support from the family can be very stressful in these-already stressful-periods.

I know that you are a positive person, and this is awesome. But I also want to think that you have thought about this in a calm and realistic manner.

No. I don't have much of a support systesm. All of my immediate family is in Florida. I have lots of extended family in the area but they basically don't want to hear my sob story. I can tell they've already started the emoitional abandonment process. It's funny. I only thought people did that when you where drinking. I didn't realize it was any illness. I reached out to all of them and decided to be upfront because I really need all the brainstorming ideas I can get. I had one aunt come back with the meals on wheels idea which didn't work. My sisters are great. They suggested the unemployment office which is what I'm in the process of doing. So when that goes through I'll have some income. I really need to get to the bank today and discuss a payment holiday on my mortgage..

The problem is when I stand up and do something it's as if my body frame can't support me. So hence the fact that "Yes I can sit here and type yet can't seem to get anything accomplished."

I have new empathy for the disabled and feel bad for all of the fuck head things I've said about my disabled cousins. Things like "She can't hold down a job yet she can post on facebook all day long. The fact is that depending on the disability it's very easy to type on a computer and rest and go back etc.

Cowtown. I don't qualify for meals on wheels because I'm not housebound.

Fuck. Requesting the payment holiday is obviously going to send up a red flag on your mortgage account. If you are not behind in payments no reason to do this today.

I really think you should see a lawyer about this. Specifically about the mortgage and perhaps medical bankruptcy. You want to avoid a foreclosure on you and the property.

Your mortgage is your priority. Well, after your health issues, of course. Don't fuck around on your mortgage. The banks can be very nasty on this.

Thanks ExPat. I'm up to date thus far but I will be late in 3 days. That's when the grace period ends. I only have 100K equity in the house. Do you really think the bank will want to foreclose for that amount? I wouldn't think it would be worth their while. It's much better for me to sell my house while they give me some breathing room. I may be totally wrong on that though. I've had my account with this bank for 20 years and have never been late on a payment.

If you tell them what's going on they're more likely to give you a grace period or perhaps come to some other arrangement. If you just default with no notice I think they are more likely do do whatever is necessary to get their money back.
They can sell the hour from under you. They have no incentive to get a better price than they need to pay the loan.
Your equity may be largely eaten up by their expenses.
Or worse.

You may be right ExPat but I can't afford that. I can't afford the fucking co-pays for my Dr. much less an attorney.

That's what I was thinking DC. My sister does real estate in Florida and she claims that the bank won't do anything for 90 days. So as long as I price it to sell quick I should be OK. It's a hot real estate market right now. Only 2% percent availability. Having said that, if the bank can give me some sort of relief it would only help things.

So ExPat and DC. I need your advice. You've been very nice BTW, LOL. I have to remember to tell people that!

So my neighbors son wants to buy my house. The problem is he's only qualified for 200K (Or so he says) He's a wicked nice kid. I'd love to sell the house to him. We joked and he's like "Yeah you could stop by anytime and hangout etc." It would really make the emotional detachment from the house so much easier. I almost feel like I would be selling it to a son.

So, I need ideas. I owe 139K on the house. 200K isn't really gonna cut it. It's valued at 270K on Zillow. I figured I'd drop the price down to 250. Maybe I could go lower. My sister mentioned the idea of me stayingin the basement for a year in exchange for a lower price. His friends could also move me out for free. A little sweat equity etc.

Anyway. What do you think? I've got a ready buyer right now. How should I work this?

Manch, I don't know if this is your county, but check it out. Meals on Wheels delivers to people under 60 who are homebound and make under a certain income. I just googled NH, but you could find your local if this isn't it.

No. I'm just coming to terms with labeling myself as disabled. I've only been out of work for a month. That's the hard part. Knowing when it's not going to get any better and changing your status.

I can get out and about but I'm exhausted after a trip to the corner store or the bank and I certainly can't prep meals from scratch.

It could Mish. I just don't know and I don't have the money to go from specialist to specialist to find out what's wrong me. That's why I have to sell the house. It's so stupid. A tax paying citizen is being taken out of society because of the health care system. It's actually more expensive to do it the American way. I want to work! But I can't until I figure out what's wrong with me and I can't do that without money. It's like a catch 22.

And before someone says it, yes, I have to take some blame. You shouldn't let your finances get so depleted that one setback wipes you out. I get that and that's why I was working 2 jobs 7 days a week trying to build up my bank account.

If you decide to sell the house I think that you should ask for the maximum price which the market will bear. Not a dollar less. This is your retirement and medical expense account Manch. And we don't fuck around when it come to that. And you remain a fool if you do not seek outside advice as to your legal rights and options in these matters. And I don't mean "an aunt who works in real estate in Florida."

Yes, I at least need fair market value. The problem is that I've got a timing issue. I need to sell before the bank forcloses. If I fuck around too long then I lose everything.

Thanks Leela. Truth be told it's not just my health issues. I shouldn't have let things get so dire. You don't allow your bank account to dwindle to the point that one setback forces you to sell. The sad part is that I was "pulling myself up by my boot straps" and working tons of hours and if It had worked out I would have replenished my savings and had that financial cushion to suffer a blow. It just didn't work out. It actually backfired. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around it.

There are healthcare options for indigent people, and there are legal protections for people who lose their jobs. Many options have been suggested on the other threads. There is also the likelihood of a free legal consultation about workman's comp and/or unfair dismissal. You can't just fire someone because they're sick, or underperforming due to sickness. I think we don't know the whole story here.

Manch, are you saying you didn't register for unemployment? What were you waiting for?
