For photography do you use an actual camera, mobile phone or both?

I have a camera I bring for big trips because it takes pics in RAW format. But I also use my iPhone (the X is amazing) on hols and day to day.

all the photos posted here from my nujiang valley trip were taken by my comrade tourists on their Digital SLR cameras.

but meself I wouldn't ever bother owning and carting one now when I've got fairly decent camera on my phone thats on my person most of the time anyhow.

It's always been the average punter using the easiest cheapest camera. SLR's and later DSLR's have always primarily sold more to serious hobbyists and dads with expensive taste in toys. I would say phone cameras have taken down small camera the point and shoot types Besides "big camera" are popular with amateur filmmakers.

the old style $300, well $200, well $100, point and shoot cameras barely exist anymore, mobile phones are just as good, better even, and have completely taken over that market.

DSLR are better yet, but cumbersome.

mostly just not worth the hassle IMHO

I'm quite a photography enthusiast but find a DSLR too cumbersome. I have a high-end point-and shoot I take with me wherever I go, well almost, whether it be mountain peaks or the urban jungle. I like shooting in RAW and post-processing my pics. Of course it's a compromise between usability and image quality, so perhaps some day I'll get myself a DSLR or a mirrorless all the same.

Cell phone. Tourists lugging around a DSLR is almost as cringey as tourists with fanny packs.

I own a compact camera: Canon IXUS which I sometimes take as a backup on holidays, simply because the battery life is better than my phone.
But normally I use my iPhone 8 which, now I’ve installed a new battery, ticks the boxes for me.

I like the idea of an SLR camera because the image quality is undeniably better, and functions such as manual focus are handy... but it’s a pain to lug around, and kills any spontaneity as offered by a phone camera. Quick-and-dirty post-processing filters on Instagram make up for the poorer image from a phone camera, so I’ll save the weight, space and cost of an SLR by using my phone instead.

Thinking about it, the other advantage of the phone over my Canon Ixus is that it takes a photo the second I press the shutter, without any delay. In that respect, it’s like an SLR (at least like the pre-digital 35mm film version, like I used to own - I’m sure modern-day versions are similar).

I have S9+ now, but miss the "home" button on the S7 which quickly brought the camera up one-handed with double press.

Can do same with S9+ using power button but it's hit or miss and usually requires two hands due to annoying Bixby button on the other side of the phone.

Smartphone cameras, especially the high-end models, have come a long way and have replaced cheap compacts. Some of the images I've seen are really amazing. Still, I think there are a few areas a smartphone will always be lacking in like handling, manual control, larger image sensors and quality lenses.

Sensors and lenses exactly but iPhones are great for taking pictures around a house I'm thinking about buying, if I need to document something with a photo and generally anything I would use a point and shoot for.

I've never worn any of those items and they are not anogolous to using quality gear for a job.

I'd want a real camera if I needed a powerful zoom lens. Going on a safari, or a wildlife sighting tour in a rainforest, something like that.

For everything else, the latest phone's cameras are as good or superior to most point-and-shoot cameras out there, come with built in editing software, plus all the benefits of being on your phone - data enabled, convenient storage, compact, etc.

Probably 90% of the people lugging a DSLR around don't know what they're doing with it anyway.

I use my iPhone.
Husband uses his Motorola android phone. Except when we're going someplace photogenic. Then he hauls out his mirrorless camera - I think it's an Olympus OMD EM5 or something (mutha has same or similar).

Husband cares about decent photography and knows a lot about it through his profession. So I don't even bother.

He took some good pics in Vancouver. He brought out the zoom lens yesterday on that long jetty by YVR, for the egrets and planes etc.

Yeah, it seems weird to me to cringe at a camera even I don't use if often anymore.

Regarding the heavy SRL comments. The mirrorless SLRs are much smaller and light weight. Love the zoom and photo quality.

Eric- in most situations it’s like seeing someone with $700 worth of trekking poles and hiking boots doing a 2km walk on a flat dirt trail.

All the gear and no idea.

My point and shoot is exactly that.
I turn it on, take a picture. Sometimes I set the focus.

My phone - I swipe it on, select camera, I click to shoot and it asks me if I want to turn on location because blah blah blah, so I say yes and then realize the photo op is gone.

Or say it is bright sun and can't see the screen so I guess on where I am shooting. Phones are definitely worse for that.

That's not to say I don't take a lot of pictures with my phone, but I like my point and shoot cameras and my DSLR

Yeah, my phone goes from standby to taking a picture in about half a second..
Samsung 7, just press home button and swipe camera icon then take picture.
Don't need to unlock screen or anything else.
