Calling Niner and all the pigs

Post by veronica_inheels » Fri Jul 06, 2018 5:18 pm

I am afraid that my pet pig may end up like your hog.
It's big. It's strong. It probably has tests that can take your hand off. It's About 6 months old. Friendly, you can ride on it. (Not me, I am staying out). We like her, but this is going to be an issue.
How do you go about slaughtering a friendly animal? Not yet, but when she starts being weird.

Are we all invited to eat the bacon, ham, and sausages that result from the cookout post slaughter?

When I was in high school, I was driving out in the country one night, smoking pot with a couple of friends. A cat darted into the gravel road in front of the car, and I ran over it. I stopped the car, got out, and found it gasping in the dirt, broken and doomed. I love cats. They are Genies. I was completely stricken by the sight of a Genie dying on the road, because of me, and teared up. One of my friends made fun of me, saying "It's just a cat." I did it a favor, and wrung its neck. That was about 26 years ago, and I'm still haunted by it.
I am Stalking you.

we were never allowed to name or make pets of animals that would be slaughtered

for the pig, it was very boxer – a man with a truck showed up and took it away

about a week later, we were filling our meat freezer

Any butcher or game processor can handle that for you. Talk to them first but fall is usually the best since the fat can be mixed with wild game to make sausage.

Yeah, that cute and cuddly piglet eventually grows up to be big and strong and sometimes hard to handle.

When the time comes, look up a local Ranch Butcher online or yellow pages and have them come out to butcher your pig. Might want to have the squeamish be somewhere else when slaughtering time.

Look at my OP on Ranch Butchering on the Food Branch if you haven't already. It'll give you an idea what to expect.

You'll want to decide on a local butcher shop where the meat will be processed before kill day.

If you go the game processor route, I'd take it in before hunting season. They tend to get pretty busy in the Fall.

I lol'd.
The butcher or slaughter facility will bring a trailer to pick it up.
Go back in a few days and you have bacon and pork chops in wax paper.

I've brought deer in to a place like that before. They give me cuts (backstrap!) and make sausage out of it. Venison is delicious, but you need to kill the deer yourself.

We can get someone to do it. I am looking for emotional support.
A neighbor takes his pig on a ride in his truck a month before slaughter so his pig gets used to riding and doesn't get stressed out when the time comes.
I saw that thread Niner. It was easy looking: someone came to your pig and did it. Not sure if we get this option, most likely the pig will have to travel to the slaughter .

Maybe it will not be killed. We don't know yet.

Have you ever attempted to load a fully grown fighting pig into a livestock trailer?

It is not for the faint of heart. I once came away from a pig loading with my arm full of splinters and bleeding all over the place.

Really, unless you have friends with REAL experience in butchering, I'd hire a pro ranch butcher. Best 120 bucks you'll ever spend.

A 6 month old pig will normally weigh 250 - 275 lbs. Which is optimum butchering weight.

Yea- in the islands they would slaughter pigs in our backyard for customs (killing them with a knife rather inexpertly). I learned to bundle the kids into the car and flee. It was awful.

My dad raised a no name pig when I was 6 or 7. I wouldn't eat any of it.

maybe a farm sanctuary will take her, although that's not really what they do. i'm sure you can find someone if you really want to save her.

personally, i dont think i could ever give away an animal i had raised. i am always shocked when i hear of people giving away their pet dogs or cats.

I have a friend who claims his cousin was involved in stealing a pig from a slaughterhouse and stashing it in a safe house, apartment in the city until it was relocated elsewhere. All a part of an underground pig rescue network. He was a bit light on details but I want to believe
