From DCC''s link:
Sources in the rescue operation, including divers who took part, told the BBC that the boys were heavily sedated ahead of the rescue to prevent them panicking in the dark, narrow, underwater passageways.
They were then strapped to one of two rescue divers tasked with shepherding each boy through the underwater parts of the system, and bundled into stretchers to be carried through the dry parts.

There were conflicting reports in the hours after the rescue about the extent to which the boys had been medicated before they were brought out.
The Thai prime minister on Tuesday denied reports that they had been sedated, saying the boys were given only light anti-anxiety medication commonly provided to soldiers.
But several sources have since confirmed that the boys were only partially conscious as they were brought out.

But I heard some stretches of the cave were so narrow, they had to take equipment off. Those packaged people would fit?

Maybe an adult, muscular white man had to take stuff off his back. Thais are thinner, boys and even a 25 year old.

The boys weren't wearing tanks.

But bendiness might have been an issue. They might have had to take the boys off and dismantle the stretchers at some points.

This is a clip from the videos I saw. They said the boys were on these stretchers, but I'm not sure if that's a person or just equipment.

The quote above says they were carried on stretchers through the dry, which I take to mean walkable, parts, and "strapped to the divers" when underwater. I don't really get that last part, especially with respect to the passage too narrow for a diver with a tank on his back.

Way back there, Flobster was saying it was good the kids spoke English. Apparently only one could, Adul Sam-On, 14.
Adul was born in Myanmar's self-governing Wa State and left his family behind to get a better education in Thailand, according to reports.
The left defender speaks Thai, Burmese, Chinese and English, and was the only one able to communicate with the British divers when the group was first discovered.
BBC.

So it is good that Thailand had accepted this immigrant/refugee family.

I'm not sure "self-governing" is the right term for the (two-part, unofficial) Wa State. "Rebellious" might be better. I am curious as to his ethnic background. The language list suggests that he might be Chinese, but "Adul" doesn't look Chinese to me, nor does Sam-On look like a Chinese family name. Although I guess the Chinese of the Wa state might be quite different from what I am used to. The ethnic Wa speak an Austroasiatic language (same family as Tagalog, Maori, Malagasy, and Hawaiian).

I saw a short video in which the boy was cocooned in some sort if padded thing and eyes closed (diving mask on) being taken out of the water. Horrifying as it seems, I do think drugging them was a safer option, and not just in hindsight, than having them try to swim through narrow passages under water in the dark. I cannot imagine a universe in which any of them could do that without panicing, and would have drowned as a result.

There was also the possibility of one boy freezing and refusing to go on, which would have put everyone behind him in jeopardy.

This Australian source has a much fuller biography of Adul Sam-On, and adds Wa to his list of languages. So I imagine he is ethnically Wa. I hope he gets Thai citizenship out of this. He is at the moment stateless. "With no birth certificate, no ID card and no passport, Adul cannot legally marry, get a job or bank account, travel, own property or vote."

It’s just a PADI cash-cow. It is to SAR and rescue swimming what a pebble is to a mountain range.

Edit: there are a few things many divers would not instinctive get, like towing techniques, that are useful to know.

I saw an article that said what I had been thinking for a while but didn't want to say until everything was ok ... this will make a cool movie. Apparently studio execs have been scouting the site already.

I also read that US specialists were there, but that the US has no one that is trained in cave dive rescues because they are so dangerous even to train for and the payoff is so rare.

There were places where the divers had to remove their tanks and push them ahead through narrow passages. In some of these passages the water was so murky that you couldn't see your hand in front of your face with a flashlight.

Also the latest news (sorry if I'm repeating, I haven't read everything here) is that a water pump failed right after the last person got out and the water level in the cave suddenly jumped, possibly making the rescue impractical if it hadn't already been completed.

Thailand does not give out citizenship easily, and certainly not to peasant interlopers. I know a few people who have gotten it and they've been business people who spend decades in Thailand.
There are about a million illegal Burmese in Thailand. The Burmese are pretty much marginailized and often exploited. Ped Noi 1.0 played with one when he was about two years old -- her mom rented sidewalk shop space from a family friend who is also a sort of relative in the Pratunam section of Bangkok. She was a few years older, and sang a Thai patriotic song and was wearing a "Rao Rak Nai Luang" (We love the King) T-shirt

Hilltribes who live in Thailand are usually restricted to the province where they live, and there is a significant Vietnamese minority in the Northeast provinces along the Mekong who have been there for generations - not just since the US war -- who AFAIK are also restricted to their home province. Those restrictions aren't strictly enforced but they are on the books.

I had a friend from Buriram whose last name ended in -On with the hyphen. She was ethnic Khmer. Mrs. Ped's aunt (before Mrs. Ped was Mrs. Ped) said I should watch out for her because those Isaan Khmer women practice a really heavy grade of black magic. This Adul is the only other person I've run across with -On as part of a last name. I don't know what the significance of it is.

Interesting: new reports change the role of the 25-year old coach. Rather than leading boys, irresponsibly, into the cave, he found them there after their parents raised the alarm that they were missing...

    See here:
    https://www.ft.com/content/f40c4924-845 ... 565ec55929
    http://fortune.com/2018/07/10/raceahead ... ve-rescue/

Possibly the origin of the story:
Their parents’ concern drove their coach 25-year-old Ekapol Jantawong, a stateless orphan who shared their love of football, to the cave. Near the entrance, he found their bikes, a discovery that meant he had to go deep inside to try to locate them and bring them back.

During a previous oil industry slump, like 25-30 years ago, I was doing my offshore survival at Fort William and met all these guys on diving courses who'd been lured north from deepest England with ads promising big wages in the North Sea. Paying their own way through the course, of course. Some had taken loans.

The bubble had already long burst by then.

I met one later - he'd found work as a harbour diver (in the murk) and occasionally for police work.

It's only got worse as ROV technology has got better.

I was wrong in the last sentence. The family that includes the Polynesian languages is Austronesian. Austroasiatic is the new name for the family that used to be called Mon-Khmer, of which the best known members are Khmer/Cambodian and Vietnamese.

And in case somebody is reading this without having read my later post, other reports say that he also speaks Wa, so my guess is that that is his ethnicity.

    He's such a massive douche-bag. Can't stand him.

His comments about mass transit sound like they were concocted in a jerkwater american town with two stoplights.

Just as an aside, I would like to note that the coach has apologized for his decisions.
I realize that admitting you were wrong when going through life as such an asshat may be a tough pill to swallow, but go on, be a man for a change.

Did he say he was sorry for what happened, or did he actually apologise for his decisions?

Can't you just admit you were wrong instead of trying the old semantics tricks?
let me put it another way, do you personally apologize when you didn't do something wrong?
"Thank you for all the moral support and I apologise to the parents."

    Your link doesn’t work.
I bet there is no mention of his decisions.

Take your loss of face like a man and move on....jeesh.
He apologized, like a man...something you could perhaps learn from.

The parents don't seem to think that he has anything to apologise for.
