July running etc thread

Post by simon_in_exile » Sun Jul 01, 2018 3:27 pm

So I started the month with an 18 km run, from home to Red Square. Half along the river with t-shirt off, being rained on, which is bliss with the humidity here (including passing the World Cup final stadium at 9 km), and then the last 5 km were in baking sunshine again which sucks the energy.

I did 13km yesterday. Today I discovered I don't have any aspirin in the house.

My knee has been giving me problems. This is new to me. I’m trying IT band stretches, a roller, and ice. Im not sure what else to do.

I had to stop at 10km two weeks ago. I read up on how to solve this, and the advice was to run at least three times a week, with just one long run, and to take smaller steps ( aim for three paces per second)

I did that the next week and managed 13km without knee pain during the run, but about 36 hours serious soreness after.

Almost a year now. Since starting a new job I've fallen from three runs per week to just running on Saturday and Sunday. It's definitely limiting my ability to increase my longest run.

Six miles swum this week.

The outdoor pool, the joy of my summers, is still closed. That is two weeks gone of the nine-week season. And they say they will have an update on progress on Monday, so it certainly won't be open until then.

Woke up yesterday and was straight out of the door, running 12 km from hotel to SE of Pula, along the rocky limestone-fringed Istrian coast past a naturist campsite, through corn fields and alongside a vineyard to a lighthouse, and back again.

And then 12 km again today, in just under an hour, on a treadmill staring out of a window at some plants. Yesterday’s run was better.

42 km for July so far.

36.2 miles so far.

After 6 weeks of slow steady miles I ended tonight's run with a 4:00 minute interval at 5k pace. Nothing snapped or popped so am pretty psyched. I've also recently switched to running without my phone & music. I'm enjoying being disconnected even if for only an hour.

I used headphones a few years ago in Malaysia, for 6 months or so, but I also decided that I prefer the sounds around me to random music.
Today’s accompanying sounds: insects in the trees, and tourists by the sea - ran 10 km along the seafront in Rabac, Croatia. 27 C and sunny, but not humid so it’s manageable, and that’s 52 km for July so far.

A lamentable 1.6 miles swum this week. I have been home most of the week with workment rebuilding my deck.

And the outdoor pool is still being repaired. It sounds like we will lose half the summer at least.

Wow, I'm impressed!! How did it go? Did you feel wiped out half way through, or strong till the end? Did you make your target time, if you had one?

6:20/km, which was my target. I didn't push the pace because my main priority was just to finish.

My air and energy were fine all the way through, but legs and knees were stiff and sore for the last 6km.

13km this morning. Just cruised and mostly enjoyed it. All my runs are on a paved trail that winds through trees/woods (& a large reservoir) so is mostly shaded. Lots of different flowers, plants, birds & wildlife that can be seen. Bald eagles, red tail hawks, pelicans, cardinals, snakes, turtles, rabbits, turkeys, whitetail deer, raccoons, coyotes, standard forest critters. The forest changes, too, from mainly pine to hardwoods, which helps keep things from getting monotonous or boring.

A slow start to the month: 43.5km this week and 91km for the month. Hopefully some cooler days and/or earlier starts will get me back to it...

5.6 miles swum this week.

Outdoor pool still closed, 4 weeks lost out of the 9 week season. I suppose at some point they may announce that they won't open at all. :(
