Chet_Pinot had it done about 15 years ago.

He's the first person that came to mind. Maybe he was the first person I knew who'd had it done?

I'm blind like dragon, and do not qualify.

Implantable lenses are a possibility--would negate the need to have cataract surgery when old. But seems a bit risky. If you need adjustment, they have to go back in and slice up the eyes.

I have always assumed my eyes would just keep getting worse even after I had it done, so I’d need new glasses eventually. Also, what about the need for reading glasses? Currently I need those only when I wear contacts for distance vision or when I’m reading smaller print.

When he was 80ish, Dad had cataracts corrected plus an implantable lens. He still needed reading glasses but not anything for distance. He was happy.

The need for reading glasses is due to deterioration and muscle weakness due to age. LASIK can’t fix that.

I had mine done way too early (I was 22), when my prescription was still changing every year. They warned me then that it wouldn't stay perfect forever, and sure enough, I'm starting to need glasses for distance vision now.

Results are much better for people who get it done later. My mom had it done when she was about 45 and still has very good vision at age 68.

I recently went and had an eyesight test because I thought mine was deteriorating, turns out I just had dry eyes. Too much chlorine I think. Eye dr told me the worse your prescription the higher chance of yours eye deteriorating and top up lasik might be suggested.

Here they won't do lasik a second time (at least the doctors I've consulted). You can get another laser surgery, but it's called PRK and it's a slightly different procedure with a longer recovery time.

I think he already lives in a darkened basement.

In DC they call them English Basements, and I seriously wouldn't be surprised if our little Fargolita actually lived in one.

He tromped half way across the country to live in the big city, and the best he can do is fill out government forms for a living and sleep in someone else's basement.

Have implantable lenses.

Had the op last year. Very happy, would absolutely make the same choice.

No glasses and no contacts getting infected and fucking up my corneas.

Fifteen or so years ago. My vision was fine at first, except for night vision, but four years late I was wearing glasses again.

You are literally the very first person I've met who wasn't happy with it, Ledbetter.

I also have only met one person who ended up wearing glasses again within a few years, but I think she got a "touch up" of some kind and now, several years later, she doesn't need them anymore.

My brother had his done at least 12 or 15 years ago and has never looked back.

The procedure is a little creepy. They hold your eye open with a speculum, Clockwork Orange-style, cut a flap, and then do magic with, like, lasers. You can smell your cornea burning. Then, 12 minutes later, it's done.

They use a topical anesthetic administered via drops to numb the cornea, but no sedation. It's supposedly good for life, although they say that close vision inevitably deteriorates as it does for anyone else. Eventually, I'll likely need readers. During the procedure, they produce a light target to focus your vision on, while they work on the cornea. It was more uncomfortable than painful, although I did find myself curling my toes throughout.
