Camped out under an LA freeway pass the whole time you were there, huh?

Anyway, if you don't know anything about American food I suppose it doesn't really matter.

The point is that the US is a much larger country than Ireland and assuming its food production is all at the Midwestern level is really rather dim.
But they have artisan cheese.
And you have that quasi-plastic crap that's individually wrapped. But you do have hundreds of different sugary cereals and chocolate that tastes like vomit. USA!!!

Correction.
I meant James Martin, not Guy Martin.
He's a British chef who has been doing a motorcycle tour of the Napa area.

I'm in the San Fernando Valley, so not exactly cutting edge, but every other restaurant / bar here uses wide horizontal wooden planks on the walls, then puts up about ten television sets.

It sucks. It'd be okay if there were only one or two places like it - but there must have been a fire sale on those planks. Looks like this. Not sure if it's supposed to be industrial or what:

I hate that shit. Like you say, once or twice, okay. But It's become the Wide World of Planks out there.

What ever happened to seat cushions? And acoustics that allowed you to hear the person two feet away from you without the aid of a megaphone on their part?

And goddam fucking televisions at every fucking bar, don't get me started. They installed one at Pera, for Christ's sake. Pera!

That wooden plank bar could be Anyplace in Bend, Oregon. That style is everywhere.

Have restaurants finally given up on truffle fries? Because that was one shitty trend.

My what should be dark neighborhood pub has so many enormous television screens in it that you have to shield your face from all the toxic light flashing toward you, as if a nuclear explosion were taking place.

Even the sweet little sushi joint near me has huge screens blaring whatever dumb sport is on the television that night.

It's all part of the end days.

Nope trixie, still plenty of truffle fries to be had, though granted not quite as many as before. Every place does have mac & cheese now, which isn't actually a bad thing after a few drinks.

Truffle fries, and their cousin, the bowl of truffle popcorn. Vile.

I met a former colleague at a coffee shop last week...what happened to comfortable coffee shop seating? The only option was a weirdly designed metal chair in which--either you're leaning way back with the back gap sucking out your lumbar spine--or you're sitting weirdly alert and on the edge of the seat. I think it's worse for we shorties. I was so restless and uncomfortable that I accidentally kicked him.

I'm sick of New American Gastropubs, which seems to be about half of the restaurants out there anymore. And they all have truffle fries and mac&cheese. And 1000 IPAs that all taste like shit.

Oh, indeed. I totally get Bulletpark's point on the Edison bulbs. They've been a cliche for years now. I just still like the damn things. I would add farm-to-table are religious imperative. Though I've seen so many stupid restaurant trends come and go over the years that I really can't get worked up over it anymore. ("Oooh, but it's so tall." "Oooh, foam!")

Gourmet pizza is the only kind I like. Give duck confit, blue cheese and carmelized onions any day over the normal slop.

There do seem to be an overabundance of IPAs. I like one noe and then, but they kill your palate.

There’s a rolled ice cream place that opened on my corner. I’m glad it signal a further neighborhood revitalization and there are always customers, but freezing and then rolling it in a tube takes all the creaminess out of it. The trend will be going the way of oxygen bars in a year or two.

I don't want to eat anywhere where there's a TV.
I remember a TV in the breakfast room of my otherwise very decent hotel in NY. It was always on. What's up with that?

I ordered a salad in some yuppie wank place next to Pike's Place Market in Seattle a few weeks ago. They gave me a whole quarter head of iceberg lettuce on a plate. For nine dollars. I still can't believe that 'trend'.

On another note, the flood of Mexicans has really improved the Mexican food outside of the border states over the last 30 years. Good stuff is available everywhere, in even the small towns like The Dalles or Bend or Winnemucca or Des Moines, WA.

I want food on a plate or in a dish.

I want a proper amount of vegetables. Ie about 5 times more than you usually get.

I want a cheap child menu of boring foods that children like - bits of bread, hummus, cheese, boiled egg, bread and butter etc - On a small wooden board for them is ok.

The bread and butter was one of the most exciting things at a Michelin starred place we ate at recently. Which isn't a slur on the rest of the tasting menu, which was stunning. But I didn't know bread and butter could be so good.

But yeah, usually, what flora said.

The food in the place we're staying at the moment is great. Dinner last night was a self service antipasti course, homemade cheese ravioli with tomato sauce, a tomato soup, pork fillet with hazelnut stuffing and a cream/mustard sauce, roast potatoes and spinach. Lovely, all really tasty, but nowhere near enough greenery. Needed a bowl of broccoli and green beans or something.

Maybe we just eat loads more veg at home than other people.

Being asked if everything is OK.
Being interrupted mid-sentence or mouthful by somebody who wants to say “is everything ok.”
Being stood over by somebody who will ask ‘is everything ok?” If anybody pauses for a second.

Fuck off.

I agree with that.

They can ask me if I everything was ok as they take my plate away. It's unecessary, but I don't mind it.
