Olympic Theme Music

Post by cowtown » Wed Feb 14, 2018 9:20 pm

In the US we get blasted mainly with Leo Arnaud’s Bugler’s Dream tacked on the front end of John Williams Olympic Fanfare and Theme. Upon reading, Arnaud's fanfare had been used in the US since 1968 for TV coverage and Williams added his bit for the 84 Olympics. Williams wrote some more Olympic music for later games in the US, of them 1996's Summons seems to get the most play but we still hear the others. Recently read that Leonard Bernstein wrote music for 84 too but it wasn't used, need to track that down.

Curious what music other nations blast on their broadcasts during the Olympic

Not exactly theme music, but since Torvill and Dean won gold in the figure skating at Sarajevo in 1984, I have lost count how many times I have heard Maurice Ravel's Bolero

For Formula One Grand Prix we get the instrumental section of Fleetwood Mac's The Chain.

Its a good fit, but I've never known any different.

I can’t see the Fleetwood Mac thing, I’ll have to google

So does pretty much everyone use the Williams themes (or the American packaged feed), and it’s not nation specific? It’s become synonymous with the Olympic here

that's boring

I was actually just wondering about this last night.

We usually just hear the beginning of this.

OK, that makes sense for F1, which isnt a big thing here (NASCAR). I wasn't thinking about that part, the intro to the song was tripping me up and then it's rather slow

so, a bit disappointed by the lack of responses, do we all use the same music or is your coverage backed with ever changing music?

In the US the above songs are synonymous with the games
