The ones that had jewish or christians living in muslim majority countries was a bit iffy i thought. sure they're christian with their hair and faces covered, but they do that because of the muslim majority societal rules. Not because they're christian.

Potpie, I agree. If the law is a woman must have her head covered what faith she is has little to do with it.

4/8.

Not sure potpie is entirely right. I recently saw an exhibit of Jewish costume at the Jewish Museum in New York (highly rcommended if it is still there) and one recurring theme was that Jews tended to adopt the costume of their neighbors. Not because the law required it but because they come to believe that that is how people should dress. There was even a black outfit with one of those grids over the eyes from Iraq between the world wars.

Sometimes in Baltimore I see women with long skirts, long sleeves, and their hair covered, and I don't know from a distance whether they are Muslim, Amish or other conservative Mennonite, Orthodox Jews, or Catholic nuns. And hereabouts each is about as likely as any of the others.

i've noticed more headscarves, rather than wigs, in the ultra-orthodox in Brooklyn than in previous years -- but i dont really know what that means, maybe it's just a different sect. on a different note, Orthodox Jewish women sporting more and more beautiful, sensuous wigs have been chastised recently -- and even had fatwas -- issued against them by rabbis

korgy, you realize rabbis don't issue fatwas? I know all cultures are like equal and shit to you (except the Magnificent Headgear ones), so proceed accordingly so your tall-bike set doesn't excommunicate you from vegan yoga. This probably requires you to become Cross with me.

Headscarves are cheaper than wigs.

Strife, "fatwa" was the word that the Forward, a Jewish newspaper, used for the rabbis' decrees in the article that korgy linked to. The Forward probably thought it would be understood by more people in their readership than the technically correct term. I think they were probably right. What is the technically correct term, by the way?

Oh please, and guess what will happen if the jews didn't "adopt the clothing of their neighbors" especially if the area culturally always has the women in ninja attire. You think the uncovered jewish women would be left alone by the rest of the community to live and let live? Not even.

Most people adopt the clothing of the place the are living in, potpie. I see very few Arab immigrants here in thobes and agals.

heh -- i didnt read strife's post. i figured either he or Moe would make some stupid comment. they are both on ignore, but i open their posts occasionally.

to be fair, Moe would probably have clicked on the link first, because his brand of trying to humiliate people (his favorite thing) is based on him never making a mistake like that. Felix is too scattered.

from the Forward:
Long or stylish wigs have long been a point of contention in the ultra-Orthodox community, with a new fatwa issued every year or so by various leaders.

Earlier this past summer, a group of rabbis in Israel compared long, “loose-flowing wigs” to “meat cooked in milk”.

strife still thinks you should have used the proper term for such a rabbinical decree. Shortly he will let us know what that is.

apparently, the Jewish equivalent to "fatwa" is "responsa" -- but that assumes one is using the actual meaning of "fatwa", which is simply a religious ruling. (like jihad, seems to me many Islamic terms have become used by many only to apply to extremes and to exaggerated senses or events)

That's because it's not hot as hell here.

I see a lot of muslim women in SF who wear headscarves. Which is no biggie. And I've seen muslim immigrants wearing burkhas in SF. Full black outfits with only a slit for the eyes. Ninjas. I'm told there's even more in the East Bay. Those outfits don't belong in the US.
