We, the Cognooscenti....

Post by NorthAmerican » Wed Feb 14, 2018 3:25 pm

I am not a sports fan. I post this here, rather than in the Sports branch, because I'd be willing to bet that hundreds of thousands of people, many of them in the United States, never heard of Slovenia before today. We have the advantage over them, thanks to Klara and others here.

Whoa!

I think this is the first time in ages that the NHL hasn't halted for the Olympics, so there are no big name players, and I've been wondering how that is going to play out.

Also: I can't believe NA posted a sports post!!

You did well posting it here.

There hasn't been a sports post made in the sports branch for 12 hours - and that one was about the merits of female speed skating attire (another topic the opinionated idiot Lost Soul demonstrates no understanding about)

I believe the countries of the FYR are very much into Yankee sports.

I guess this might mean you are only World Champions in American Football now!

It was actually Brits who came to Canada that popularized the game.

I've know about Slovenia for about 35 years, before it was a country.

I learned a lot about it from Louis Ule, a tireless advocate of the notion that Christopher Marlowe wrote Shakespeare's plays.

http://themarlowestudies.org/author-ule.html

Few people have read Louis Ule's book on the life of Christopher Marlowe

Louis Ule was born in the early part of the twentieth century, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Slovenian immigrant parents.

because I'd be willing to bet that hundreds of thousands of people, all but 1 of them in the United States, never heard of Slovenia before today.

There, fixed that for you. I qualified as there has to be at least 1 other person outside of USA (probably in Japan) that has 0 knowledge of Slovenia existence.

Anze Kopitar (great hockey player for the LA Kings) is from Slovenia. Believe his father was coach of the national team at one point.

Heh sure.

Yah I think hockey fans know about Slovenia, mostly because of Anže Kopitar.
Hockey is sort of big here, but not huge.

Well, if you can embarrass the Amerikkkans at hockey, you're not all bad. Wouldn't happen with Canada, of course.

The stupid is strong in this one. Twice.

First, it was not a post about "attire". It was a correction of D-Day's thesis that speed skaters are skinny, "like whippets".

Second, hockey is not a "Yankee sport".

Carry on...

I only have a thin knowledge of Ice Hockey. I find it boring.

I am aware that American ice hockey teams are good, and Canadian ice hockey teams are shit.

But, i am assuming this means all the good Canadians play for American teams.

..

And im not the one uploading photos of male speed skates to show female speed skater have muscular legs.

Who was that again?

You know nothing! Canadian ice hockey teams are NOT shit.

But yes, lots of players on American teams are Canadians.

Was a great game, thought we were outplayed by the US, but some great goal-tending by our back up goalie saved the day.
Should be a really good final.

Also Eric, game was faster cuz they played on the big Olympic ice surface, which is wha the NHL should play on....but thats another thread entirely.

No, the women's game is clearly faster than it was the last time I saw them play. True of the men's game too but more noticeable with the women.

Yeah, so? If anything, better/faster skating is more evident on bigger ice because even with more room, the women are closing in on puck carriers faster than they did even a couple of years ago.

Half of Americans are completely a-political, a-news, a-the sun rises in the west, a-anything except sports, weather and pussy, and diets and fashion.

And 40% of the rest show up to vote every four years, knowing almost nothing but the headlines of the previous two weeks.

Which leaves 30%, or three out of ten. The Stew is not normalcy.
