Airline Seat Sale

Post by EMG » Tue Feb 13, 2018 4:32 pm

Urghghhh... they discounted ALL their tickets on CebuPac.

I just booked a round trip flight to Vietnam for $47. And I can match that fare going to Tokyo in December. But I could also go to Bali for the same price and I've never been to Bali.

Should I just buy them ALL?

Yes buy them all.

What part of Vietnam? Pretty well liked all areas we went but the North was special due to 4 days hiking in Sapa region and then 3 days on a "Chinese Junk" in Halong Bay.

if you go to Bali there is decent diving in NE coast in Amed area. Think NW coast is probably superior as there is national park around couple of island off the coast...M something I think.

I booked Ho Chi Minh for June. 9 days. Going to rent motorbikes and drive around.

I'm booking Tokyo for December now.

Then I'm going to take a break and think about how far I want to take this.

15 paid days off plus all local holidays which is around 20 per year.

MNL - Ho Chi Minh = $47 RT

MNL - Tokyo = $49 RT

Both confirmed

Next I'm gonna look at domestic. Bet I can get some in the $15 range.

I've been wanting to go for years. Can't wait. A former coworker and I are chatting about the seat sale and she's going to try to overlap her dates with mine.

Bali was $100.

Hong Kong is always tempting but I don't want to go during summer.

Australia and Greece didn't have the discounted fares.

Some domestic destinations are only $20 but I've been to so many of them already.

I've got two girls talking about booking overlapping dates with me in Vietnam. I'm not sure they'll both fit on the back of my motorbike.

I think Bali will have to wait. I'll just pack more domestic travel in between these two.

Ok, good, I think one of them is going to miss the sale. That would've been tricky.
I cannot believe that price to Tokyo though. Cheapest I've ever seen is maybe $380. Typically $500+

No, that's just the term that popped into my head. The airline just calls it a promo.

The budget airlines here do them frequently. I know they did one on 1/1/2018 where base fares were 11 pesos. This was called the "Love is in the Fare" promo.

They sell out very fast though. Booked just after midnight when it started. By 1AM those same dates were sold out of promos.

i'd skip bali then if you're used to nice beaches and all that jazz. it'll be more of the same. i like it though, but i didn't think amed was up to snuff if you've scuba dived in some places i've seen you photograph. it would be ho hum after that.

i didn't like vietnam except for the food, but most people tell me it's because i didn't make it up to hanoi. people like the north better. i hated ho chi minh. i didn't think the landscape was spectacular after living in taiwan for 3 years. it looked similar and it wasn't as friendly. and there was india level hassle.

other people have other experiences. you might have fun.

Vietnam has always appealed to me mostly for the food and culture. I'm sure the landscape out in the country will be much like the Philippines, but I still enjoy motorbiking around the Philippines, so I'll be fine there, and the food will be better, and a different history/language.

Plan right now is stay in HCMC for a couple days until my friends arrive then head out on a motorbike and putter around the country for a few days before heading back to town.

A few of my friends went to Bali recently. Their photos looked nice but nothing I can't find here.

No plans yet for November, Homer!

The beaches are nice, but that's not why you'd go.

In fact, even though some of the beaches can be very nice, I wouldn't spend much time there for various reason.

#1 They're full of bogans.

#2 They full of touts. Worst place I've ever seen in my life for touts. In fact, they have a law that the touts can't go on the actual beach because they are so bad. But once you step off the sand, it's like flies to Felix.

Are you allowed to rent motorbikes in Vietnam? I guess you looked into it.

I love Vietnam. I stayed at Park Hyatt there the first time, back when it was $150 a night. Now it’s twice that.

If it’s anything like the Philippines, they won’t even check if you have a drivers license. I do it here all the time.

Okay. I know you can’t rent a car unless you’re a citizen, but it must be easier.

I went to a resort town called Mui Ne near Phan Thiet. It’s a bit of a distance from Ho Chi Minh, but a car ride back (for over an hour) was only $20 US. The resort in Mui Ne was really nice, and Phan Thiet was a good city that was more laid back than Saigon. My wife got huge amounts of attention there. Even little boys were giving her the thumbs up. We also saw some ancient Cham ruins, and an abandoned fortification that was used in WWII, and then the Vietnam War.

The only problem with Phan Thiet is that the smell of fish sauce comes suddenly around every corner. It’s renowned for its fish sauce. It tastes great but smells terrible.

I wonder if I can do a Tokyo-Cebu flight for that price? I’ll check it out.

That's good info, Godjira. Thanks. I'm going to very slowly put together a loose itinerary so towns a few hours away would be perfect pit stops if I'm going to be motorbiking around for a week.
In the Philippines they literally ask you nothing when renting a motorbike except which one you want, and then you give them a valid government ID to hold on to until you give the bike back.

Try checking out CebuPacific.com. The sale lasts until midnight today. Promo dates are June 1 - Dec 31 but they sell out of the promos fast.

No problem- the resort I stayed at in Mui Ne was really nice. They were little bungalow rooms with a bed room, living room, a bath, and an outdoor shower. All just a few meters from the beach. Then it included breakfast, and they had a nice pool. All for about $80 per night.

This is the place. Some of the staff were really friendly and helpful, others were outright gruff- that's Vietnam for you.
http://www.phuhairesort.com/

Having a motorbike would be really helpful there. We relied on taxis and walking, and it wasn't a very good way to get around. I think that is true for any beach town you'd go to.

In this area, grilled shellfish seemed to be the specialty. I saw a rock lobster the size of a turkey that was going for $100 at a restaurant.

Also, I rank Vietnam number 1 for consistent massage quality and value

I'm gonna be doing this one on the cheap. I'm targeting $20 hotels and street food and such. It'll be my first 'long' (9 day) trip in a while.

The girl that's going to ride with me is a rich-kid FilipinoAmerican though, so that may offset my costs a bit and I will adjust as applicable.

I love Vietnam, well the North of it. If I was you I'd book a domestic flight to Hanoi and then head back down to HCMC on bike andsee how far you get then travel the rest of the way by overnight train. Other than the Cu Chi tunnels there aint a lot worth hanging around for in the South.

Oh, and buy a bike and then sell it at the end if you can sort out some contacts. You should be able to get one for $200 and sell it for close to the same amount.

What is it about the North that makes people like it more than the South?

I like both of your ideas but I'm probably not there for quite long enough. I've already agreed to wait for my friend to arrive in HCMC for 2 days, so that only leaves me with 7 after that in the country.

South is more 'developed' with very little of interest to see and what there is to see is more spread out. All the temples and the crazier stuff is in the North. Mind you, it was 12 years agothat I was last there.

Wait for your friend and then fly up to Hanoi and use that as a base. You could easily fill 7 days if you included an overnight trek into the hill tribes area. Depends what you wanna do as I imagine most sights ,such as Ha long bay, are pretty similar to what you get in the Philipines.

I'm really mostly in it for the bike riding. I rent scooters and putt around the Philippines for a day at a time here and there, but I'd love to do a 4 or 5 day ride on this one.

My friends that went last year used HCMC as a base and did a 9 day ride, hitting 6 smaller towns along the way in a circle back to HCMC. I might just do a condensed version of that. I get enough mountains and nature and shit here in the Philippines.

And yeah, Ha Long Bay would be very similar to parts of Palawan, where I'll be again in a week.

Consider
1) getting a pair of “goggles” such as those made by Bobster for eye protection on the bike.

2) It doesn’t hurt to have a dust mask with you.

3) That goes double for a first aid kit.

4) I believe there has recently been a scam specifically targeting foreigners on motorbikes in or near MuiNe. Fake cops (or maybe corrupt cops) “bust” you for technically driving illegally in Vietnam. They confiscate the bike. They know there is a 99.99% chance that you surrendered your passport as a deposit, and now the fun begins as they see how much money you can drain from accounts to rescue your passport. I’m not saying don’t go....I’ll get more details from my brother who was staying in Mui Ne last year when he saw this stuff taking place. IIRC there was a specific stretch of road that was to be avoided. And I may be wrong on location....there’s a chance he was talking about NhaTrang.

Thanks, Vince. Good stuff. I will look into goggles here and maybe pick up the first aid kit there since it'll be a bit bulkier.

Let me know about #4. It's still a bit early for me to plan out an itinerary but Phan Thiet was on my tentative list of places to hit, on the way towards Dalat and then back towards HCMC via Phuoc Long. Haven't discussed any of this with my friend yet, so we may change it all.

ETA: If it's Nha Trang I doubt I'll make it that far.
