Korgy, you think the analogy is not apt because arms growing out of ears are very different from flowers of different species growing on the same bush.

I agree that they are very different, but disagree that that makes my question inapt.
no, the reason the analogy is not apt is not because one is very different from the other, and i told you why the analogy is not apt -- no need to change what i said. i'm pretty sure an arm growing out of an ear in a presidential portrait would be blatantly, visually ludicrous to most people. two different flowers perched on the same leaves in the background is not blatantly, visually ludicrous to most people, as far as i can tell.

we're talking about art obviously, and you are certainly entitled to being bothered by two different flowers appearing on the same leaves. i'm just fascinated by the things that bother you. it does make you interesting -- i will say that. you're not one of those people on this board who has to cry and scream and post a thousand OPs to distinguish yourself-- which is a good thing.

I prefer more traditional portraits, but I kind of like the Barack one (and I have to see it in person now to see if it really is sperm).

S8: It isn't.

Korgy, when I say that something looks silly, I think you can take it as read that I mean that it looks silly to me, not that I know that it will look silly to most people. I don't even know whether most people will have taken in that different flowers are growing from what is apparently one species of plant.

On a different topic, I generally don't like it if something in a work of art needs to be explained by a text appended to the work of art. I think the work of art should be autonomous. And I don't think anyone would have picked up on the fact that the three flowers in this painting represent these particular three things about Obama if the artist hadn't said so.

Obviously sometimes the context of an old piece of art will now be unknown to most of us, and it will need to be explained that e.g. an Egyptian wall painting shows the sky goddess Nut arching over the earth. I mean things like the footnotes TS Eliot himself added to The Wasteland. If they were necessary, the poem is therefore the less.

Vinny, on your second topic -- the fact that there may be intentionally contextual aspects in a work of "art" that can only be intellectally understood if one goes little deeper into the relevance -- this does not necessarily mean those aspects "need to be explained" for the work to be appreciated. there are signs and symbols all over most Renaissance paintings, but some of those artists have become known as much more exceptional than others. whether or not one is aware that the objects in a Piero della Francesca have religious or metaphorical or symbolic meaning, for many people, does not make the painting better or worse -- the point being that the objects dont "need to be explained" for the work to be appreciated.

if you saw a Piero della Francesca painting that you thought was deeply beautiful, would you change your opinion if someone pointed out that the walnut tree was a symbol of the Christ's crucifixion? would it ruin it for you?

Korgy, I don't think you understood what I am saying. As far as I know, Piero never supplied any verbal explanation of any painting of his. He thought the paintings spoke for themselves, as they do.

LOL! Turns out it IS sperm!

Fact #1 - This artiste likes to put sperm in his paintings.

Fact #2 - Obama does indeed have a vein in his head in that area, but once it gets closer to his hairline, it decreases in size. It doesn't increase in size, making it appear to look like a spermacito.

High res picture of the portrait - https://www.snopes.com/obama-official-p ... erm-cells/

Picture of Obama's vein - https://www.gettyimages.com/license/453785074

Btw, I got the link to Obama's vein from Snopes, who called the story false, as they tried to make the case that because Obobo has a vein in his head, that means there's no sperm there ... when there clearly is. Another Snopes FAIL!

He's a gayer who is obsessed with putting sperm in his pictures, as he did with Lord Obama.

Putting dicks in it isn't really a stretch after that.
