Am I insane?

Post by OnTheBall » Mon Feb 12, 2018 2:40 am

I am about to turn down a principal role at a kindergarten in Shanghai. It is a new school and they want a foreign principal to run it and grow it. This is something I have plenty of experience in and could probably do it in my sleep. The bad thing about it is that it isn't an international school and later on when my kids are old enough they could go to a Chinese school free of charge but not an international school. The role provides a free apartment and, amongst other things, pays around $AUD160,000 per year.

I'm about to turn it down for a role as a classroom teacher in a biggish regional town in NSW. The school is a school for kids with behavioural and mental health issues. The role pays $AUD52,000 after tax. No housing provided, of course.

I'm crazy to fucking do this, yeah?

Is it an annual contract? Is it the sort of thing where you could give it the initial period and see how it goes?

How is the quality of life in the NSW town vs what the money could get you in Shanghai?

Would it be easier for your wife to find work (or continue what she's doing now) from either location?

The Shanghai job sounds like the better option, but I like big cities.

Ideally this, but if I do this then it would mean having to start all over again in Australia (they don't recognise the experience in China). Starting out again is fine in your 20s and 30s, but I'm 39 now and in my 40s if I do this, with two kids on board (I don't want to drag them everywhere as they grow up).

Anyway, I need to drive back to Sydney. Should be around 6 hours. Reply to the rest when I get back.

Yes, there is a nice river that is right on the town. Local aboriginal supporting teacher told me that's what a lot of locals do.

Unless it costs 100,000 AUD annually to send the kids to international schools, sounds like Shanghai is the better option. I must have missed something?

I think you know the answer
- If you want to end up in Australia and bring your kids up here, you need to take the NSW option and get your career here grounded
- If you dont care about where you end up and are happy that your kids are International then take the Shanghai one it is a no brainer

Two incomes at a somewhat lower lever can be the same or better than a single higher one because of tax as well.

The $52k is after tax, right? If you want to be in NSW and/or the NSW school appeals to you more, take the NSW job. It's not a good idea to make job decisions only based on the salary.

Depends on the cost of living in Shanghai, although free housing ought to make it pretty low. I'd be tempted to go for the money option, at least 2-3 years. Early 40's is fine in the teaching game I'd have thought.

If he wants to return to Australia, then yes of course that's the obvious choice. The only consideration additional to salary though that he gave us is "The bad thing about it is that it isn't an international school and later on when my kids are old enough they could go to a Chinese school free of charge but not an international school."

In that case, it's just about the cost of an international school.

Yeah, after some thought that would be my answer too. I've recently stopped a job and couldn't be happier even though my income will take a hit for the foreseeable future.

Plus if the town is within a comfortable drive of Sydney you'll have a lot of big city amenities to hand.

Way to go avalon, you just doomed OTB's kids to a life of misery or something.

I think you should skip the current NSW job and keep hunting for other jobs in Oz. There have to be more opportunities out there.

I understand both parties are open to moving elsewhere. What I don't understand is WHO doesn't recognize job experience from China? That's weird.
That's a big salary difference. I'd do it for a few years, but yes, maybe not to definitely a not-attractive destination like China is to you. The third option mentioned here may be best. i.e., keep look for a better paying job in Australia.

In China all it takes is money for paper qualifications- we see that here with new immigrants who have Chinese driver's licences but have never actually driven they just paid someone to sit the exam for them and the instructor to pass that person.

There will be better jobs in NSW, but he'll most likely have to start at the bottom to get in the system, and work up.

Shouldn't be a problem as his experience kicks in.

And as leela says, I imagine it's a great job if you have any kind of aptitude or desire to do it.

The 50k is after taxes, 160k is before. So presumably we're really comparing like 80 with 160. But anyway, go ahead.

I still think you should choose the job you want in the location you want, with the money as a secondary consideration. Obviously if the NSW job doesn't pay enough to afford a basic quality of life for you and your family that's another matter, but I doubt that's the case at 80ish K.

Working for 2 years in China, would mean you could set yourself up in Australia very nicely. Deposit for a house etc.

Also working with difficult children as your first job would be very very hard, I would re consider that but that’s just me.
