Yanny or Laurel?

Post by leela » Wed May 16, 2018 10:37 am

The blue or gold dress thing seems forever ago. So what do you hear in this clip?

There's absolutely no confusion for me. Laurel is crystal clear, and I can't begin to understand how anyone can hear anything other.

No way it is Laurel. A fuzzy nanny for sure. Cannot understand what you people are listening to.

WAIT- on this one it is clearly Laurel. That is odd- on my phone it was absolutely NOT Laurel.

Laurel. And I correctly saw the dress as white and gold, so you can obviously trust me on this.

I should try it with my hearing aids in.

Edit: Same.

An article about it did say that the amount of bass makes a difference to how it's heard.

So, as with the dress, it can be either/both.

Can hear them both. The higher-pitched Yanny or the lower-pitched Laurel. It's weird.

I was right about the dress being blue, so I’m pretty sure I’m right about this one, too. It’s unequivocally Laurel.

It’s two recordings. Yanny on the high frequencies and Laurel on the mid and the low.

So, a young person listening to this on a cheaper phone or earbuds might choose to hear Yanny, wider range speakers might reveal Laurel. But it’s more complex than that because low frequencies travel further than high (any frequency is blocked by a material longer than its wavelength, which is why bass goes through walls and treble doesn’t) so a low frequency will step all over its higher cousin even at equal power, in an every day listening environment.

The fun psychology part is that once you’ve heard one name your brain strongly resists hearing the other, so even if you try to test yourself by listening through different systems it’s unlikely you’ll suddenly hear a change.

If the volume is down you can hear something that sounds like Yanny. But if you turn the volume to a normal level it is clearly Laurel.

I find it much easier to switch with this one than with The Dress, though. Is that true for others as well? Here, I can focus on one name or the other name and switch pretty easily between them. It's a bit like a group conversation where you might try to focus on one speaker, then on another speaker. With the dress, on the other hand, I was completely unable to see the other image, let alone switch back and forth.

I'm such a Laurel too, flatfoot.

I find the opposite to you, shilgia. I could see both dresses, but on my laptop at least, totally unable to hear the alternative, never mind switch.

On my phone it comes out closer to “harry” than anything else. Which does not seem to be an option.

This may be because you don’t hear low frequencies. Are you a competent dancer to reggae music, out of interest?

Shilgia, it sounds like you have a fine aural palate. Like you could totally conduct an orchestra if you practiced a bit.

If I turn up the bass I hear a guttural laurel. It has a higher pitched distortion on it that makes it sound like yanny at lower volumes/ no bass. The variance in volume, bass, and device that everyone listens to it on is the explanation for the variance in what people hear.

Chi, that really reinforces what I was thinking since someone mentioned high and low pitch. I definitely have a certain amount of hearing loss which effect higher tones. Therefore I only hear a "bassy" Laurel.

All I can hear is Yanny, both on my phone and on my phone plugged into the car speakers, with bass adjusted. I need to try it on my computer.

Really, I hear Yanny with a Russian accent.

I haven't listened to it on my phone OR my computer, but the radio is playing right now and a few minutes ago I heard a mechanical voice saying "Laurel. Laurel." Then they said they'd talk about the Yanny/Laurel thing soon.

The most interesting thing for me is that I am aware of losing high frequencies as I get older and wear moulded ear defenders at gigs and clubs to protect myself but I never think of people who lack hearing in the low end, which at least two people in this thread have.

In the real world, people who don’t hear below 500Hz ish feel the bass through their bodies so my work is satisfying for them but I honestly never considered that range in a scientific way. Low end is always, for me, something to cut, tame or tighten because too much is woolly. Or maybe Yanny people have a hyper acuity in the high end in which case what an interesting world.

I listened to it with my laptop this afternoon and it was Yanny, not a bit of Laurel. I listen again now with the same laptop and it's Laurel, not a bit of Yanny.

How is this possible?

Wow, that's really weird. I've played this video several times on the laptop and the smartphone and all I've ever heard is Laurel. I just tried it again on my phone, with a football match on the TV in the background, and for the first time I heard Yanny, loud and clear. I then tried to reproduce the result but I'm back to Laurel.

I hear laurel on my phone

It was played on two TV shows in the US, The View and The Five. I heard yanny through my TV speakers.

But different people in the TV studios heard it differently.
