Dead Rubber - Part Deux

Post by Stephen_Dedalus » Thu Jul 12, 2018 8:50 am

Is there ever a more pointless game in football than "battling" it out for 3rd place in the WC?

Does anyone actually remember the game against Italy in 1990?

The only thing more pointless than battling for show is l00sing ignominiously to Belgium to claim 4th.

These two l00sers are playing for a measly $2,000,000- the difference between $24M for 3rd and $22M for fourth.

Well, unless both teams are playing their B teams again, it should be taken seriously. For all kinds of reasons.

The English team need (competitive) practice against decent teams. The forwards need to get over their 'fluffing' when presented with golden scoring opportunities. They need to get over/learn to deal with their panic and mental fatigue. Understand what it means/experience play in a competition over two weeks that, if you get to the final, will involve 6 hard, highly pressured, relentless games. That's how they should (mentally) approach this game - a challenge they should go for for those reasons.

Course, there's also the Golden Boot for Harry. Personally, I don't think goals from penalties should be included.

I'll watch both.

I think they will start the race an hour earlier and the match an hour later so as not to distress the French.

I will take this.

I dont get all the hate....
A chance to watch your national team play again seeems fun to me.
Im sure the players, well most the players as there are always a few twats, love the chance to play another game at the world cup representing their flag.
Its something they have worked their Entire Lives for........
Be it a group game, the final, or for heavens sake the 3rd place match.

Get a grip people, enjoy the game.
Choose my bluest tape and unlock my car
An honest tune with a lingering lead has taken me this far

If it does mean something in Belgium that goes someway to understanding the mentality behind why they aren't in the final.

They surely have the skills.

I've already seen my Belgian friends on Facebook celebrating. It's their best World Cup performance of all time.

I can appreciate you hanging your heads in shame, as you should, as you have done for the last 50 years or so, but pretending like it's what you hoped for is that stupid British thing.

Scotland's football team is shite. They can just about make it at bowls.

England did well, but their seeding gave them an easier run in the end, the harder teams were taken out by the likes of Iceland, Croatia and Belgium and they got beaten twice by Belgium.
