Its been a great world cup.

I often wonder how Americans could ever go back to the tedium of their domestic sports after witnessing some of the great football over the last few days. The high point of the American football season is the superbowl as y'all know. Fat men in tights spending hours having meetings about repetitive plays interlaced with gazillions of adverts. Do you ever wonder why nobody watches this shit outside of North America.

Well said harry...this is why i'm opposed to VAR....it works in Cricket but not in Football....anything that slows the game down detracts from it.

yup every ever 4 years we treated to this grudging and juvenile additions to the site by muthafuckwit.

I think what really fcuks the yanks off about this event is that the whole world can enjoy a truly global, cosmopolitan and exiting sporting competition and yet American involvement is completely peripheral. Most Americans see their country as rock and roll central and yet the whole world is having a great time without them. If must be one hell of a knock their national self esteem. The world exists and thrives outside of the gunosphere and you lot are just going to have to suck on it.

diving-flopping-faking

I like to joke about diving, but there's some pretty awful stuff in that link. A guy on the Dutch national team admitting he was faking falls to try to get unfair calls? In the World Cup? Sad!
In this 2014 World Cup game, Mexico and the Netherlands were jostling for a spot in the quarterfinals of the tournament. The game was tied 1-1 and nearing the end of regulation time when Dutch midfielder Arjen Robben drew a penalty close to Mexico’s goal.
A reasonable person could argue that Robben was, in fact, tripped by Mexican defender Rafael Márquez. But reasonable people are often wrong about many things.
This was Robben’s fifth attempt during the game to draw a foul, and he admitted after the game that some of his falls were dives. However, he maintained that the foul that resulted in a penalty kick was legitimate.
“The one at the end was a penalty; I was fouled,” Robben said. “At the same time, I have to apologise, in the first half I took a dive, and I really shouldn’t do that.”
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar squared up for the penalty kick and buried the ball in the back of the net, pushing the Netherlands through to the next round.

2006 WC, Australia into the round of 16. About a minute to go, Italian player takes a dive, penalty awarded to Italy. 1-0 to Italy.

ok lol. but....

First time I watched a live soccer match in the states, that "flop" was my friend getting his tibia/fibula kicked, which resulted in a very grotesque bloody compound fracture I got to view up close.

I was told one of the first things one learns in football (ie soccer abroad, not sure about in the US) is how to fall to NOT get injured. Always glad when a flop results in uninjured- basketball too!

Does screaming and rolling around for a few minutes also prevent injury?

Compound fractures sound bad. The weird thing about most soccer players falling down and screaming is that they pop back up a minute later as if nothing hurts.

I do think 'diving' should be called for what it really is, 'cheating' would be a far more apt term.

It is a blight on the game, and this WC was a real chance to do something about it, a few red cards would have stopped this obvious over acting, but nothing was done and the cheats continue to cheat don't they?

Heh. I was there, sitting closer to the incident than the referee.
Sure looked like a dive to me - Grosso dragged his foot over Moore who'd slid to block a shot .

Ref came running down from midfield somewhere, waved at the spot, Totti stepped up and made no mistake, no restart, last kick of the game.

Otherwise Italy were facing extra time with 10 men, and Australia still had substitutes to use.

Still, we should have been able to win in normal time. Materazzi was a total big cheating cunt, whacking little Cahill in the face each time they jumped, then going down holding his own face. Too bad he was allowed back for the final and succeeded in getting Zidane sent off.

But on the other hand I gotta give it to Cannavaro, the little guy was a genius defender and always took the ball cleanly from the feet.

Zidane got himself sent off, the big sissy. I will never forgive him for it. Materazzi's sole job was to throw Zidane off his game and Zidane let him do it. Plus Zidane didn't have to be on the field as France went down to the diving cunts, thereby leaving his team gutted to deal with the humiliation without him. Real leadership, there.

Yeah, he shouldn't have reacted. In a WC final, FFS.
Supposedly stuff about his sister or mother that was close to the bone.

But Materazzi got away with a lot of stuff behind the ref. He'd be fucked with VAR.

Stuff about his sister and his mother? You mean like grade 7 boys yell at each other on the playground. Zidane was one of the best, and was a veteran. You think he hadn't heard variants of, Yo I fucked ya mama! about a million times? No, he was frustrated that France was going to lose to the diving cheating Italians and so he got himself sent off so he didn't have to be on the field when it happened.

Zizou broke my heart.

And no argument about Materazzi.
