Best world cup anthems

Post by equus » Sun Jun 03, 2018 3:13 pm

Do other countries do them better than this?

England's Irie.

Where else are you going to see Top of the Pops with: Shaun Ryder, Bez, Keith Allen in a kilt and Joe Strummer in a 1966 England top, whilst holding a megaphone.

Look out for the clip on YT.

The Marseillais by a country mile, as Kenneth Clarke said in 'Civilization', if you cannot be stirred by this old French Army marching tune, you have no heart.

Absolutely stirring music, but the words are gruesome. The refrain:

To arms, citizens!
Form your battalions,
That their impure blood
May water our furrows!

And the last lines of the anthem:

May the enemy, dying,
See your victory and our glory!

Mireille Mathieu is a hell of a singer. I read up on her and supposedly some Frogs sniff at her for her Languedoc accent. I wouldn't be able to tell the difference, of course; or know if it was expressed in song, or even this song. Maybe it includes the rolling of the r's? She's as good as a Spaniard at that. I wonder if she sings 'ferrocarril' anywhere? I guess she sings in multiple languages.

Proper football nations have football anthems, though.

3 Lions is the best but the slightly revved-up 3 Lions '98 is good too. It has the advantage of having audio of football crowds singing 3 Lions from two years before.

But 3 Lions 2010 sucks.

We seem to be talking about two different things here, national anthems and football songs!!

Kilombo: Do Argentines sing only that abbreviated version of the anthem at sporting events?

The first time I heard it, at the opening of the Oktoberfest in Villa General Belgrano, the musical introduction was so long I started to sit down just after the three fortissimo chords that end it, then quickly stood again when I heard "Oid mortales..." and realized that the anthem was just beginning.

You can blame me for that. I ran across that La Marseillaise, and felt the need to post it somewhere.

'Three Lions' may be sung at world cups (so is the theme to the Dambusters), and it may have been remixed for the 98' World Cup, but it is not a WC song.

It will always be about the 96' European Championships in England.

He's not on the bass. You will have to watch the full clip. At the start he's standing at the back. He comes to the front at the chorus.

Struggling to follow the logic of your points there. I posted the 96 version because I like it better, but wiki says of the 98 version.
It was subsequently re-recorded with different lyrics (under the title "3 Lions '98") as an unofficial anthem for England's World Cup campaign in 1998 and landed the number one spot in the singles chart for a second time, beating the official England song "(How Does It Feel to Be) On Top of the World?" by England United to the top spot by eight places.

I'm not a sports fan, but I thought it was a combination of both. There were a total of 15 short videos where I found that abbreviated Argentine anthem sung in Russian, each of them submitted to be used as a TV commercial either before or during the World Cup. Do those qualify as "World Cup anthems"?

Allow me to boast that although I'm not knowledgeable about sports, I do know my native city well, and that qualified me for a spot at one of the most prestigious locations of the various information booths for visitors when Chicago hosted the World Cup in 1994. There I was, answering questions at the booth set up in front of the Wrigley Building (on the left in the photo below).

I hate it now when the Dambusters song is used by England fans. Typical brain dead Brexit morons who still want to shout "2 World wars and 1 World Cup..!"

It's got fuck all to do with anything apart from xenophobic delusions of grandeur connected to irrelevant mis-used and abused Tommy Robinson style patriotism.
