Krispy Kreme In Dublin -Mobbing Ensues

Post by BeatRaven » Fri Oct 05, 2018 11:17 am

Once again, the world prostrates itself before the gods of American grease and corn syrup. What shit won't they line up to scarf down?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/mor ... 8f3bbe6380

What other American chains do you rightfully hate yourself for loving?

For Yanks, what foreign chain do you wish was avail in the states (Me: Nando's Chicken, MK Thai restaurants)

It opened last week and they were giving away free doughnuts. I was out there the next day and saw no mobbing. It was all very polite, civilised, and no one was shot, and there was absolutely no honking - very unAmerican.

I tried to bring Krispy Kreme to Ireland about six or seven years ago but I thought the fee for the master franchise was excessive. I'm surprised by the queues, even for free stuff, as I thought the doughnut thing was a fad that had died as several indigenous doughnut chains have gone out of business. Maybe it's more of a Zeitgeist than a fad.

I'd like Shake Shack to open a branch in Dublin. We have Five Guys and it is shite.

Krispy Kreme was huge at Harrods a decade ago. On Fridays at 5 PM, you could get them 1/2 price and there was always a line.

I'm not a glazed donut man at all, or a donut man in general. A sugary jelly donut (the fried kind) would be my choice.

I think Dunken Donuts is a better donut than Krispy Kreme. And what of the cruller? Like the bialy, yesterday's news.

If you could buy a Krispy Kreme donut franchise, Iolar, then you, not Mothefunky, are indeed Richie Rich of the board and all further disagreement with you is simply down to jealousy.

They wanted €10m for the master franchise so I declined. It was before the doughnut fad was a thing here. I wonder what the master franchise cost!

At the food court here in Shitville, #1, by a mile, is Chick Fil A. #2 is Krispy Kreme. #3 is Chipolte. #4 is Panda Express. No one else has a line.

I love Panda Express. I would eat it every day if I could. I went to the world's largest Panda Express in Honolulu.

It went crazy for a short while whenit was launched here about a decade ago and then fairly quickly it wore off and went into administration, it was revived and continues but now mainly from sales through 7-11 convenience stores.

It used to be a thing that if you were late for work you’d arrive with a box of Krispy Kreme as an apology.

Unfortunately, for me this associates Krispy Kreme with failure and all those habitually late people are unemployed now.

The only time I tried KKs was at a block sale in Toronto - they'd brought in a bunch of boxes of them and were selling them for a buck each, or something like that. My friend and I were excited to try them for the first time ever.

Maybe it's because they were a few hours old and cold, but it was disgusting. Like biting into a stick of butter. I actually couldn't bring myself to swallow the one bite I had. My friend got her bite down, but we threw out the rest of the doughnut.

I don't like Krispy Kremes. Too greasy for me.

A homemade apple cider donut in October/November is a treat, though. It's a bit like a classic candy apple - just good enough to be a little bit more than nostalgia.

I dislike donuts in general, so don't see much of a difference between KK and any others. KK is very popular here in the Philippines, as most anything American is.

If someone could open a Whataburger near me, that'd be great.

I remember KK rolled through Tucson about a decade ago. High quality sugar rush stuff. I really liked it.

Unfortunately I almost never indulge in the stuff and even if they were next door and not 10 miles away I still wouldn't buy that much.

Seems like a pretty specialized product and it's not opiate or cocaine based.

I think the franchises are dead now but I'm not completely sure.

The good thing about Tucson is we get some Mexican franchises like Pollo Feliz.

I like real jam doughnuts. But Krispy Kremes are some sort of weird confection of fat and an alien kind of syrup, and really really horrible.

They failed miserable all across Canada when they arrived in 2001 and all closed up shop within months.... Now they are trying again with a few select markets like Toronto and Montreal... Why?

Like a lot of these chains, I thought it was OK when I tried it, but not good enough to go back a second time.

We have both in Manila as well. I eat at them often.

I didn't really know how hyped up Nando's was the first time I went. I knew the sauce was a thing, but wasn't expecting much. I thought it was good.

Love their Xiao long bao. But you have to follow the instructions properly

How to eat xiao long bao
Put soy sauce and vinegar into the bowl with sliced ginger. ...
Take the soup dumpling and dip it into the sauce.
Then put the dumpling into your spoon, and poke a hole in the wrapper of the dumpling to release the juices.
And finally eat

The ginger/soy/vinegar combo is the key. Poking a hole is optional. Make sure you have some slices of ginger in the spoon.

Soup dumplings hit NYC circa '78, at a place on 18th Street and 8th Avenue (still there, diff name). It was reviewed in the Village Voice and then in The NY Times a week later. But pre-foodie mania, exposure at that level meant maybe a 3/4's full restaurant on a Saturday night. It was a pork and scallion filling with bits of water chestnut. Back then, water chestnuts were in all Chinese food.

And then, it was about a dozen years before there was a second soup dumpling place. People weren't eating dim sum at all, there were only 3 places in Chinatown. Now you can get head-sized soup dumplings all over town (comes with a straw, like a pina colada).

For me Krispy Kreme is in the same class of a lot of fairly popular foods: Big Mac, KFC, Chick Fil A. Tried once, didn't find it too bad, but haven't been tempted to have another.
