Potatoes or rice with tuna steaks?

Post by Scrubb » Wed Oct 03, 2018 10:12 pm

Will be making sesame-coated tuna steaks for dinner. Should I make basmati rice or potatoes to go with them? I think I'd slice and fry the potatoes, probably with some onion.

I like both ideas but the rice is easier so I'd go with that. Because you have to watch the tuna steaks like a hawk to cook them well. Or at least I do.

Always rice with fish for me. I don't actually know why, I just feel like that's what I usually make if I need a carb with it.

True, that, rider.

lolasf, yeah, I usually do rice too. I'm just in the mood for potatoes.

Now a second question - I usually do tuna steaks in a cast iron pan. Should I try them on the BBQ instead?

Sesame coating makes me think rice. Or noodles.

BBQ sounds harder to get a good outside sear and inside pink. Unless you go super high heat.

Fine! I'll do rice!

And I'm happy to use the cast iron pan - just wondering whether it was worth trying to grill it instead. I'm thinking it would stick badly and be a pain in the ass. If it wouldn't be any better, I'll stick with the pan.

My gas grill gets hotter than hell but I would still use an iron pan.

Fried potatoes with onion over boiled rice unless you're making some kind of sauce.

It turned out delicious. I did cook it slightly too much, but it was still pink in the centre, at least, and it wasn't dried out. I just can't seem to get the timing right - it's always either still raw most of the way through, or too cooked. Guess I'll go back to undercooking since that's fixable while over-cooking isn't.

Hats off! I aim for blackened outside only, with red hot pan, then let rest on a warmed plate, yet still manage to overcook sometimes. Infuriating. aaand now I have a hankering for blackened tuna. With soygingervinegar sauce, so white rice. Or soba noodles with scallions and same sauce.
