Never had a Frosty?

Post by ManchVegas » Sun Sep 30, 2018 7:09 pm

Mom, who's pushing 80 had never had a Frosty until yesterday.

How do you live to be that old and have that happen? Especially down here. There's a Wendy's every 5 miles.

I met a man on a plane that was a ripe old age. I offered him some of my pistachios and he was like "Not sure if I'd like them. I never had them before."

FFS. What's wrong with people?

Do they just get in a rut and only eat the same things all of their lives?

I have never had a Frosty.

And now I never will, because somehow I don't think I could get the image of you taking a dump with the bathroom door open out of my head as I prepared to sip from its chocolaty goodness.

I'm pushing 81, and I don't even know what a Frosty is.

Is it a milkshake or malt? If it's either of those, I must have had hundreds of them in my lifetime, starting at the ice cream parlor at the end of the block where I grew up and then at places like Woolworth's "dimestores," Wimpy's, Big Boys, Steak 'n Shake, McDonalds, and others.
I enjoy reading NorthAmerican's posts. So well-written and interesting except for the dull parts.--Nines

What is a frosty? I'm picturing a soft serve ice cream.

The neighborhood Wendy's is really nice. Faux fire place. Sofa lounge area. It's almost like a coffee house.

Has anyone ever made a chocolate malted milkshake at home? I've only had them out.

What do you use for the malted part? Ovaltine?

Martha Stewart has a recipe but it seems way to complicated. I'm thinking you could just prepare Ovaltine chocolate flavored mix and add a couple scoops of ice cream and blend it in a blender.

I really want to get this for my frozen concoctions: https://www.hamiltonbeach.com/drinkmast ... assic-730c

Remember those from your youth?

It's only 40 bucks on Amazon.

I expect ovaltine and icecream will produce that far too sweet icy slurry you are looking for, but no need to buy an appliance that can do only one thing. There are lots of kitchen contraptions that will do the job. I bet your mother has something that will work. A stick blender or regular blender or a food processor for instance.

VIn, that's true but I it's hard to find. I checked the Publix.com website and they don't carry it BUT they do have two types of Ovaltine. The US version and the Euro style. I'll have to compare the two and see which one is best suited for this application. Lol. Can you tell I've got time to kill.

Mish, I can use a regular blender but it's a pain in the ass to clean. I'm now drinking lot's of non-alcoholic frozen drinks. I think I've gained 10 pounds. I've always wanted one of those old skool blenders and it's only the price of a couple vodka bottles.

Stan I love the old Wendy's commercials with the red wigs.

I've never had a Frosty. I wouldn't have even known it was from Wendy's, though I could tell it was a branded fast food name. I'd rather get a frappe from an ice cream parlor.

I had to have a person working for me who had never, ever had a blueberry.

I wouldn't have known that a Frosty came from Wendy's either.

I was wondering if I had been wrong and if I had once gone into a Wendy's with a friend who wanted to try a Frosty when they were new, but some further research reminded me that what she wanted to try was a McFlurry from McDonald's. I passed.

I like Wendy's. There is one near my house that I can walk to. They now have vanilla frosties but they're not as good as the original

Last month I donated $2 to them for some orphan charity (their founder was adopted) and they gave me a tag for my key chain that give me a free small frosty with any purchase through 2019

I used to love the Wendy's Frosty. I'm lactose-intolerant now, though.

Manch, your mom aged 5 years this year? I mean, it makes sense.

Manch, if there is a Wal-Mart near you you can order malt powder online and pick it up at the store.

Chip, Mom is actually 78. I thought she was 75.

Vinny Publix had Carnation Malted Milk after all, it was next to the Ovaltine. There's a recipe on the back for a "Fountain Malt Shake." It's:

3/4 cup cold milk, 3 tablespoons NESTLE CARNATION Malted Milk, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla and 2 scoops of ice cream. Blend and serve.

I used a scoop each of chocolate and vanilla ice cream. It tasted just fine and much easier than Martha's recipe. She has you chilling glasses in the freezer and garnishing with malted milk balls etc. https://www.marthastewart.com/345032/malted-milk-shakes

Malted milk balls in there sounds good actually, but yeah, look elsewhere. I find Martha Stewart recipes tend to be needlessly fiddly with no redeeming features to show for the trouble.

Mish, in the recipe photo she somehow managed to layer the shakes so the chocalate's on top and vanilla is on the bottom. WTF? How did she or her food stylists manage that?

Two batches of shake, one vanilla and one cholate, united in a glass by careful and slow pouring in a way that avoids tubulence during the pour. Add more different colored layers if the spirit moves you.

It would probably help to make the bottom layer with skim milk and the top with (less dense) full-fat milk.

Everyone's doing Door Dash around here. It's the polar opposite of my place in NH. No one delivered up there. Nothing, nada, not even groceries. The one exception was Amazon. You could get non-perishable items from them.

I might look at getting a job with Door Dash. I've heard of people making a hundred bucks a night just in tips etc.
