Nation with the healthiest cuisine

Post by ManchVegas » Sun Sep 30, 2018 6:00 am

Hypothetically speaking. If you were restricticted to eating the cuisine from only one nation for the rest of your life which would it be?

For me I'm thinking Thailand.

Israel.

Falafel and tasty shakshuka. Israelis are tall and hot.

Too much mercury in fish and why do the Japanese have to invent Yakult if they so healthy huh?

Too much cholesterol in Thai food and they’re all short arses.

For me the healrhiest is Israeli. Greek is good. I felt really good after eating Vietnamese food for a few weeks. Otoh was instructed to get a hepititis shot, so I'm thinking some people are getting sick.

I really liked Cyprus for food. Lots of fresh grilled selections. No fussy sauces or preparations. Nice salads etc.

I really want to try Shakshuka. It seems to be the the dish of the day. I might be able to find it now that I'm down in Fla.

There's also a place in DC, The Conflict Kitchen. They specialize in dishes from countries that the US is in conflict with. Don't know if they're still around but though it was a great idea.

Italian is thought to be the healthiest overall, I think. Indian and Mexican seem like they would be good in terms of providing protein, fiber and a general balanced diet.

I love Japanese, but it is very high sodium and low calcium.

Yeah. I like Indian. Another cuisine that is readily available here but not in NH.

The neighborhood Publix supermarket has almost every variety of Amy's dinners. They include Indian dinners. I find them to be restaurant quality.

The palek paneer is wonderful and it's just a enough food.

I'm happy to say I'm eating again. I seem to have a desire for watermelon chunks and hot buttered corn on the cob.....and yogurt.

I assume I'm gonna need to branch out at some point and add different foods.

I wonder how many foods one needs in one's diet though. Didn't the Irish live off just potatoes for hundreds of years and they did just fine.

The Irish peasantry really did pretty much live off potatoes and milk or buttermilk for generations before the famine. Somebody once asked Cecil, the name of whose ask-me-anything column I forget, whether that diet would actually supply all necessary nutrients. The answer was that it had everything you need except for molybdenum, of which you you need a trace amount, and which is found in large amounts in oatmeal.

I’m getting slightly jealous of Irish housewives now.
They just poured some milk and boiled some potatoes for dinner. Easy peasy.

Yeah. It's common knowledge. The Irish lived pretty much off of potatoes. You can watch videos. They lived in tiny dung and wattle thatched roof huts and just ate baked / jacket potatoes.

That's why when the crop failed in 1845 they had a massive famine.

Jacket potatoes? Without beans, cheese or coleslaw?

The horror.

I remember conversing with Rob and Randy. Back in the day. The pub we went to had a dish called "Irish Nachos"

I was like "Are they made with blighted potatoes?"

Randy got it. Rob didn't.

Bacon on Christmas maybe. When the Irish got to America, the kind of bacon they used to boil was not available, so they substituted corned beef.

They must have prepped the taters in different ways.

I would imagine they may have sometimes sliced and fried them and added the occasional onion to the mix etc.

It reminds me of my early years. Every fucking day was a peanut butter sandwich. If we had a bit of extra money I got a piece of fruit, bag chips or cheese doodles.

I was so fucking envious of kids that ate things like fried chicken or a roast beef sandwich. I remember Andrea breaking off a piece of her chicken and handing it to me.

It's funny how a single random act of kindness really does last a lifetime. That was like 1971!

A diet of buttermilk, potatoes, and oats is probably why the Irish were so tall in the 19th century. Nobody here really consumes buttermilk nowadays unless it's in brown bread. It is a major part of the Dutch diet, though and they are tall people.

Do you suspect the tiny dung and wattle thatched roof huts that the Irish apparently used to live in played any significant role in things?

They didn't really live in proper houses. That's why in New England we have separate terms. Lace Irish and Shanty Irish.

A Scottish family by the name of Monteath owns it now.

My mother get up in a traditional farmhouse in Wexford, not exactly thatched, but the same design.

A TV crew came out to fIlm it once, sadly it is now derelict. A lot of good memories in that house, fitting 50 people in for Christmas, eating in shifts.

Now everyone has their own big car from the age of 18 and have built their own 4/5 bedroom house.

Yeah. Mom had a beautiful contemporary house in Bedford NH. It was used to stage furniture for a catalog. That house was just gorgeous. Floor to ceiling windows. Cedar siding. Really breathtaking.

Anyone bored. Look it up. It was Pilgrim Road Bedford NH. I think it was 1 Pilgrim Road. It intersects with Meeting House Road. She was the house on the corner.
