They're not that friendly. They won't let me access their web page.

Good memory!
That was from college--my friends had a bad experience at Friendly's.

I've never noticed them to be mean. Nor are they just in the northeast. We used to have them in Ohio. But one feature of Friendly's that's held for going on 50 years now is SLOW SERVICE. No matter how few customers they have, it takes them a coon's age to get your order to the table.

Re: Friendly's!
Friendly's was Brigham's with weird names for things. Like Fribbles. I think the last one I was in was in Connecticut around 1995.
I knew a guy who worked there as a manager and told me about a time when a high school punk came in there to harass one of his high school employees. They had a policy that the help could not fight with the customers. So the employee took of his name tag, slammed it down on the counter, and said "I quit", went out to the parking lot, beat the crap out of the harasser, and when he was done, walked back in, picked up his badge, and said "I'm hired again, right?" He was right.

Brigham's! I miss them.
A place on the Cape had Brigham's ice cream until a couple of years ago but now they have Gifford's.
And yeah, I didn't know they had Friendly's in Ohio, but I knew they had them in Westchester (NY).

Brigham's Peppermint Stick ice cream caused me to be born. (NOT conceived.)

Brigham's Peppermint Stick ice cream with chocolate jimmies is the food of the Gods. Mint Chocolate Chip is similar, but a pale, feeble imitation.DianaHaddad wrote: ↑Fri Sep 21, 2018 4:01 amI had no idea, thanks Manch.ManchVegas wrote: ↑Thu Sep 20, 2018 4:09 pmBrigham's! In Boston, Cambridge, Wellesley and maybe some other places there used to be a place called Bailey's which was even more legendary. They only had a handful of them.
There used to be ads in the subway cars saying "While you're shopping, won't you try, a great big Bailey's sundae?" I think they were on the first floor of the old Jordan Marsh building on Tremont Street.

There's an ice cream joint somewhere in the vicinity of my girlfriend's place that apparently does cones that go for upwards of $8 for a single scoop; I can't remember the name of the place, but I figured they must be taking the piss. I gather they take that shit pretty seriously in New England?

I fully agree with every word, Ped Yai and I know Bailey’s very well! Their furnishings and tulip sundae cups were awesome.

Moe, we take our ice cream very seriously in New England, Mass in particular, but it’s typically not that expensive. I am at the Cape right now and it’s maybe $8 for a cup with 2 flavors and maybe jimmies.

Re: Friendly's!
We drove by it once and there was a line out the door. Maybe the $8 thing was some special flavor or something, but I remembered seeing that and thinking they had to be fucking kidding.
I immediately thought of this scene from Pulp Fiction:
I'm not into deserts too much, but I'm almost tempted to give it a shot.

Ha, funny. You should go and tell us about it.
Btw how did you like your beach hotel? I looked into going there and they looked nice, but we have a dog with us and they don’t accept them.

Re: Friendly's!
Friendly's was one of two chain restaurants my grandmother would deign to take us to. She was under the impression (it came out later, after her death) that they were simply local places. She approved of them because, at the time, they both were white tablecloth establishments.
At Friendly's my sisters and I would be permitted to order the Jim Dandy and the flavors therein. This was very exciting at the time. My grandmother would have a single scoop of orange sherbet and my mother would have coffee ice cream. It was always after a movie, so my sisters and I would talk about what parts of the movie we liked and what parts sucked while my grandmother and mother continued their life-long conversation of who in our family did what to whom 200 years ago.
The other place was Howard Johnson's, where we went after Easter service for hot dogs with toasted buns and potato salad with green relish mixed into it. After that a spin in her Mercedes/Oldsmobile/Cadillac/other gas-guzzling monstrosity around the Ashokan Resevoir for a dim peep at the spring buds.
It somehow sounds much duller than it was.
Although I admit it was pretty fucking dull.
