Food Stuffs

Post by ManchVegas » Fri Aug 03, 2018 4:41 pm

What do you keep on hand for a no cook, no fuss meal.

It must be shelf stable. No freezer of fridge required.

I would have to say for me it's Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup.

I serve it with saltines.

And please no stupid "You have to start eating better" comments.

That's not what this post is about.

I always have a few cans of tuna and a few instant noodle cups in a cupboard for when I just can't be bothered to cook.

Sardines on crackers are ok. With hot sauce.

Sardines, nuts and nut butters, ramen, beans. Shit like that.

Thanks guys, That's stuff I can order with my Prime account. I can't get any fresh food delivery here. Not even a take out pizza. Only "dry goods".

LOL. No one believes me. I can do the occasional trip to the corner Mom and Pop. Just got back from there now. I picked up a couple of "Fit Kitchen" meals.

That's a new brand for me. Never had 'em before.

Also got some sweet corn! It's the season.........

In a cup Rez? Dried?

One thing we have here that I don't see in other countries is the La Choy or Chung King dinners. The bottom can has the veggies and the top can has the meat. They're taped together.

canned tuna, sardines, salmon
beans
canned vegetables
pasta
pasta sauce
rice
soup
crackers
would tortillas be available?
cereal
cereal bars
instant oatmeal
peanut butter
jam

I could keep going on but really, just log on and start shopping.

if I can’t be bothered to even chop an onion or beat some eggs I’ll go out or get a takeawy. It’s really unusual do neither of us to be able to face 15 minutes of cooking.

I also have a bunch of freeze-dried "backpacking" meals leftover from trips. I rarely eat those, though.

Manch and I probably have a different idea of no fuss.

My fall back is psta. Depending on what I have in the house it might be carbonara, puttanesca, aglio e olio, or marinara, all of which can be made while the water is coming to a boil and the pasta cooking.

And now that, thanks to Stan In MD, I caramelize about nine pounds of onions in the slow cooker every couple of months and freeze in small batches, there is one more: a can of tuna mixed with an equal amount of caramelized onions, heated in a microwave, over pasta.

Yeah. I must admit and onion is always a good starting point for any meal.

There was an onion riot in India a few years back. I guess they start every fucking meal in India with onions and when the prices start to double they are not happy>

I´d go with quick comfort foods:
1. tinned tuna on buttered toast
2.mac n cheese
3.Greek salad, lasagna from the grocery store already made

I don´t really do "no cook" meals. I cook. Mostly.

Why? Did your refrigerator die?

Dried and canned fruit
Tea
Canned stews
Are you seeking absolutely no-dishes alternatives?

Bundes is right though, best to get on Amazon and browse for your own preferences.
You need only ever to go out for fresh fruit and veges.

No. The fridge is OK. I just don't have the capacity at present to, slicing, dicing, shucking, shelling or hulling.

Tinned tuna, beans (baked, chick peas, canellini, black, etc), tinned tomatoes, dried pasta, rice and lentils, and frozen (sorry, Manch) prawns and peas. Onions keep well as does citrus fruit. Lots of spices and herbs in the garden. Sorted.

Then add frozen veges. Much superior to canned. Does Amazon do that? I see the sell fresh produce to certain zipcodes as well.

Well, get some from yr local grocery then. It's all shucked and chopped and such. No need to get crazy, just a few packages for variety. Can be cooked in the microwave in a bowl and eaten from the cooking dish, for ease.

Looks like you have plan to get yr fresh or frozen veges plus dairy products like butter or pre grated cheese from the local place, but everything else from Amazon. Should make those shopping trips easier.

Honestly the only non-perishable, no cook thing I can think of at home would be peanut butter and honey.

A really good "company worthy" dinner that's shelf stable is linguine with clam sauce. It's just spices, tomato sauce, olive oil, garlic, can of clams, a box of pasta etc.

I have a good recipe if anyone wants it. I found it in Yankee Magazine years ago. It's called Clancy's Clam Sauce. The Clancy family has it every year as a reunion type thing.

If we're just listing off all of our shelf-stable stuff, I could go on for quite a while.

3 or more kinds of pasta. 1-2kg of rice. Cans of: mushrooms, beans, tomatoes, fruit cocktail, coconut milk, tuna, and so on. Few pouches of tomato paste, oyster sauce, instant soups, that kind of thing.
+3-4 kinds of oil. Large range of spices. Dried peppers. Cinnamon sticks. etcetcetc

Not many of those make a complete meal without cooking something to add them to.

I'm happy with the red lentils (with mitmita) and rice, although prefer a few additions that are perishable.

"What do you keep on hand for a no cook, no fuss meal."

probably tinned baked beans, cold for breakfast, my go to early morning pre gym food.

tinned black beans with coconut oil, black vinegar, cinnamon, pepper, black salt, chilli flakes. with sluced scallion/spring onion.

I made green lentils for the first time ever last week. With some of those frozen roti from the grocery store that just take about 30 seconds per side. Rice is king around here though and I've gotten used to eating it pretty much every day.

Do Twizzlers count as a food stuff? They really are good to have on hand because they're shelf stable, don't melt etc.

I think good things to have on hand are what you find in a military MRE kit. There are whole websites devoted to MRE's from various militaries from around the world. It will give most of the guys here a hard-on.

I would send some to you EMG, but I'm guessing the shipping would be like $85.00 bucks!

I thinkTwizzlers are much better than Red Vines. You have to check the date and packaging though. They can dry out and lose that "Al dente" quality.
