How to cook fava beans?

Post by lolasf » Wed May 16, 2018 3:52 am

My sister gave me a bunch of fava beans from her garden, and I don't think I've ever even had them before, let alone cooking them myself. How do you eat them?

She said, shell them once, boil, then shell the inner skin off. That's all I know! Next stop will be google, I guess.

With human liver and a nice Chianti of course.

I searched the stew for ideas before posting, and that was pretty much all I got!

I think what you call fava beans we call broad beans, and I just take the packet out of the freezer and steam or microwave them so I’m no help to you.

Boil and salt and snack away. Also good with rice and light soy sauce. Or the less healthy option: turn them into crisps.

I think it depends on how mature the beans are. I pick them when they are still young and tender, and just lightly sautee them in a frying pan with olive oil and garlic and maybe some soy sauce. Remove the beans from the pods, and just cook the beans, but if they are tender, I don't remove a "inner skin". If the beans are more mature, then they do have an inner skin that is a little tough and can be removed.

What your sister said. Try them in a salad.

Amazing food.

Love them in season.very popular in Poland.

Boil in salted water with skin on, mayy5-7 min? Taste, I like them soft, some people like them al dente.
Drain and put good quality fresh butter on. Salt to taste.
Eat like edamame, sort off, sucking the bean out of the skin.

I love them. Will eat a lb at one sitting.

I had them for lunch, with a kale salad and a nice honey mustard dressing.

Thanks all. I'm going to do something with them tonight, but I'm still not 100% sure what. It's been a little while since I cooked a totally new (to me) food.

Lunch today Image. These are a little more mature than I like them. Getting a little late in the season.

Fresh. They are in season from June- early July. I think dried ones would take few hours to soak no? I never had dry ones.

I made it up as I went along, to use up stuff I already had. I ended up sautéing onion & garlic in the oil from a jar of artichoke hearts, then adding the artichokes, some italian herbs, a bit of chicken broth, and a can of diced tomato. Boiled the favas on the side. Added chopped up chicken breast to the main pan, simmered that for a bit then tossed the (only once peeled!) favas in with everything else and served it over couscous. It was excellent, but the favas were a little overwhelmed.

I'm really glad I tried the beans alone as well as in something. I'll be getting more next week, and I think they're super sweet and delicious, but should stand on their own.

I know, I know! I needed leftovers for lunch today though, so it became one of those meals where everything I needed to use up went in the pot. :)

Today I leaned what fava beans are.
Born a worm, spins a coccoon
Goes to sleep, wakes up a butterfly
What the fuck is that about?
