Creating Space on a Hard Drive

Post by Logg » Tue Aug 15, 2017 1:36 am

I have 12.39 GB free of 249.2 GB. My computer runs slow and I can feel it. I need to clear up space.

The HD space used is taken up by the following categories:

Other 123 GB
Audio 67 GB
Photos 24 GB
Movies 14 GB
Apps 8 GB
Backups 4.2 MB

I have an external hard drive and an icloud account, so moving stuff safely shouldn't be a problem, but I'd like to get rid of excessive stuff if possibe. For starters, is there a good way to find out what's in "Other"?

Are there any good guidelines for moving stuff to the icloud and/or external hard drive in an idiot proof way?

Is there an easy way to see if you have duplicate files in different places on the hard drive?

2 things to start with:

Have you backed up an iPhone to the Mac? Each backup is stored on it. Google hos to renovera the backup from it and you could fee up a lot. I had 20 backups so it helped a lot.

Secondly there's a free app recommend on Mac forums which also help to delete useless things.

Cool. Thanks. I think I cleared off my extraneous iphone back ups last month. I heard that the Downloads folder is a good place to look for extra duplicate files, and by far my largest files were the iphone backups, so I deleted the old ones. It's really the only thing I had already done.

I'll look for that app.

Interestingly, I just deleted a bunch of old podcast episodes and cleared up a bunch of space. I went from 67 GB of audio files down to 38. But, for some reason the backups folder increased from 4.2 MB to 8.61 GB.
Very interesting.

I've started deleting all .dmg files from my downloads folder, too. I've heard you can do that. Hopefully that won't cause any problems.

Also remember to shut it down in between.

Another trick I've heard but not tried is to download an app that's bigger than you have memory for. Apparently the system wipes useless things for you to make space.

That's the app I was referring to but couldn't remember the name of.

Thanks.

I ran the app, and it looks like I'd already deleted most of the extraneous stuff.
