One Drive?

Post by GLimpet » Sat Feb 11, 2017 8:56 am

Three of us working from home, two in UK and one in Singapore.

Singapore man and I go on the road fairly often.

We wanted an online file server that allowed us to sync and update personnel, job and technical files.

Occasionally grab a file from the cloud that we hadn't yet synced.

We've been recommended One Drive and are trying it out. So far it seems a bit clunky.

Alternatives would be something like Drop Box, or just an access path to a home based file server. We used to use File Zilla for that.

Any suggestions? Or should we persevere with One Drive?

Two of us running W10, the other running Mac.

We use Dropbox or google drive. Never used one drive.

Google is great for office type documents, for other file formats Dropbox is ok.

I've not had any luck with One Drive personally or professionally. For a start they seem to change the name of it every other week, anything to do with logging into a Microsoft account is always a minefield, poor design, and unclear what exactly what it is and isn't supposed to be able to do.

Sharepoint, OneDrive's older and even more cursed sibling, is to be avoided too.

Thanks. That's not good news though. I can see it already.

google drive. then you can access word excel etc files using Google docs and sheets if you are in a phone or tablet. set up a master google account and then have the other two create google accounts. create a foldet in gdrive and share it with the others. voila.

I have Dropbox and OneDrive - there's no difference except Dropbox is free for a small space. So I pay for 1TB storage and have all my photos backed up there. Also I have various doc on it and it's nice I can access them from my phone or either of the laptops.

I use google drive at work, and find it good. It's fairly intuitive, and I've not had any issues with it. I tried One Drive at home, but didn't get on with it. Can't remember why. To be fair,it might just be that I'd got used to how google drive works and lost patience with learning a new one.

Is Google Drive secure? Can I upload my passport?

We've got used to using One Drive now and it's working fine.

I'm also experimenting with Google drive for extra space.

I uploaded my passport to Google Drive, but I first put it into an encrypted and password protected word file in case someone hacks my Google account.
