It's the demography, stupid

Despite the momentous shifts in the demography, wealth and world status of the United States, its politicians have been dormant, writes Annabel Crabb. Surely the penny will drop.

Four years ago, Barack Obama asked America to elect him to the presidency, promising change. And change there has duly been - the most unimaginable and rapid change in circumstances for many Americans. Frightening change, in many cases.

But the change has mainly come outside Washington; the political process remains stubbornly resistant.

Check out yesterday's election, for example. How much did it cost? An estimated $6 billion? For the first time since public funding was introduced, both candidates rejected it and opted to raise multi-squillions themselves, meaning that by day they governed or campaigned, and by night they played celebrity MC to $50,000-a-plate dinners for doughnut barons or Hollywood stars.

(Meanwhile, according to the Wall Street Journal, about $250 million in public funding lies dormant in the Presidential Election Campaign Fund.)

The protracted Republican primaries and presidential campaign have soaked up time, energy and unfeasible amounts of money ... and for what? President Obama stumps back to work at the White House today to face exactly what he faced last week - a hostile Congress, a friendly Senate, and the promise of fiscal Armageddon for Christmas.

But the American people have been changing, as if in defiance of their putative leaders. Or having change foisted upon them.

Here's some examples:

"Minorities" are no longer minorities in the US. In this year's US Census, white births are recorded as slumping to 49.6 per cent of all births, with "minority" ethnic births now constituting 50.4 per cent. This is the first time in Census history this has been the case. White Americans still make up 63.4 per cent of the total population, but that will change over time.

Former Florida governor and famous presidential relative Jeb Bush told the ABC, when we visited Florida for a Foreign Correspondent election special, that the Republican Party needed to recognise that demographic change in the US needed to be reflected in the party's approach.

Yesterday's election result, in which "Hispanics" - a slightly horrible catch-all term which is sure to become redundant over time - voted for Obama 71 per cent of the time and Romney only 27 per cent of the time, according to CNN's exit polling, seems to vindicate Governor Bush rather powerfully.

White voters broke 60/40 for Governor Romney. But white voters made up only 72 per cent of the total vote, compared with 87 per cent 20 years ago.

"Obama wins because it's not a traditional America any more," lamented Fox News host Bill O'Reilly on election night. "The white establishment is in the minority. People want things."

People do want things.

But are they getting them? African Americans, who according to a NBC/Wall Street Journal poll favoured Obama over Romney by a mind-bending margin of 94 per cent to 0 per cent (Yes. Zero per cent), have not exactly prospered during the Obama years.

According to the Pew Research Center, the typical black household in America was worth one-tenth the material worth of the typical white household. By 2009, that proportion had slumped to one twentieth.

And the middle class - that heartland of American expectation, aspiration, political power and prosperity - has stopped its relentless post-war growth.

Male median income in 1968 was $32,844, according to Joe Stiglitz' research for his eye-opening book, The Price Of Inequality.

Male median income today (these figures are adjusted for inflation) is $32,137.

Lots of other things have changed in America.

Household wealth, for instance. For people who keep their wealth in their homes, post-GFC housing price crashes between 30 and 50 per cent mean disaster.

Unemployment.

The certainty of America's place in the world.

All sorts of things have changed around America's politicians, just as that group of people has steadfastly refused to change in the past four years.

Surely, surely, this election should cause the penny to drop.

Can that possibly be true, that the average black household has 5% of the wealth of the average white household?

Yes, but that has nothing to do with racism. It's a product of food stamps. Only white people are the victims of racism.

Yup.

The men are in prison and the women are single, pregnant and on welfare, raising the next generation of men in prison and women who are single, pregnant and on welfare.

It's the ghetto pathology, created by Dumbocrats in the US Government in the last 50 years.

Nah, it's the ghetto pathology created by people like Lost Soul whose understanding of black people comes from old reruns of Good Times. People that hire and cops sometimes think the same way he does, and so the myth becomes reality.

Of course, the real problem is work. What kind of jobs are available and how much they pay. The computer revolution made our daily lives easier, but they also made us worth a lot less as workers.

If you'd open your mind, open a book, this book, you'd remove the words "Dumbocrats in" from the above sentence.

And why is a whole generation of black men in prison?
Draconian drug laws, which are skewed against blacks
The prison industrial complex is not a result of dem policies
Incarcerating people is a profitable business
You can always count on Americans to do the right thing - after they've tried everything else.

Because they grow up feral, having never had a father.

Single mothers are the biggest correlation to boys going to prison and girls getting pregnant that there is.

And you idiot Dumbocrats have been promoting single motherhood for 50 years. Bravo.

Yes, I agree that this election will be seen historically as the beginnng of the end for the "American = white-skinned male" worldview. I know that it hasn't been true for most people for a while, but politicians take a while to catch on.
The world ended on 21 December 2012.

Since blacks and whites use drugs at the same rate, yet more blacks per capita are in prison for drug use crimes, the problem is clearly not single parents but something else.

The GOP loves the prison industry.

Since wealth is often about 401ks and the value of your house I can see whites having significantly more than blacks.

Note that doesn't mean that whites make 20 times as much money on average.

Blacks don't get nearly the return on investment that whites do on housing. That's why they sometimes would rather have a nice car.
