: I think that the lesson of the election is that the old America that Sarah Palin was saying was the real America, the small town, "Joe the Plumber," white America, that's still out there. But the other America, the more diverse, liberal America, has edged it out. And maybe that's the real America now.

The fact is, either the Republicans come up with a strategy to increase their base or they are doomed in the long term.

Surely you can read too much into these things? Republicans chose to narrow their appeal and the dems widened theirs and the maths around that are obvious. Does there even need to be real/unreal america?
