newbie guide for image uploads

Post by zara » Sat Dec 30, 2006 6:18 am

here's the basic instructions for uploading from your computer:

[Mod note September 2013: See pezworld post below for updated site hosting recommendations.]
- first go here: http://imageshack.us/

- in the upload line, click browse and find your image file

- click host it! (then wait until it uploads)

- on the next page, your best options are Direct link to image -and/or- Thumbnail for forums (1)

- copy the address, then paste into your post

- to upload another image, click the text in the top left corner below the frog, then repeat the steps

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
code results should look similar to these...
direct link:
http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/9199/56917gx7.jpg
thumbnail:
Code: Select all
[URL=http://img100.imageshack.us/my.php?image=56917gx7.jpg][IMG]http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/9199/56917gx7.th.jpg[/IMG][/URL]
Image
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

tips:

- to include a direct link as an image, once you have pasted it into your post, simply highlight the entire URL, then click the IMG button above the reply box.

Code: Select all

[img]http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/9199/56917gx7.jpg[/img]

- if you are creating an image with a direct link, you should restrict the size to a max width of about 600px, otherwise it will most likely stretch the screen (depending on monitor resolution). resizing can be done from the default/upload page on imageshack. however, if you use thumbnails, your larger pics will be fine (within reason, even imageshack has filesize limits).

- there are other photo upload sites, but imageshack is a long term storage. i've yet to have one removed and i've had avatars stored there for a couple years now. try to avoid using photobucket (and another that i've forgotten), b/c we experienced problems with a couple sites removing images and replacing with huge banners that stretched the avatar columns.

good luck!

*update*

imageshack now allows you to register for a free gallery where you can store any image you upload.

it's very simple to use and even allows you to upload multiple images at once. settings are much like flickr.com where you can produce a slideshow as well as set individual pix as private or public.

since i rec'd a request for a little more info on the imageshack gallery, i thought i would post the links here as well:

imageshack site

here is a demo of what the gallery of thumbnail images looks like. seems to be no limit on the amount of pictures you can upload. they can be set to private or public as well and you can share them individually or all with as many ppl as you want.

here is where you register. it's important that you save the email that is sent when you register b/c it includes a link that you need to click whenever you want to log into your account. it's a little different than the flickr site in this regard.

and once you have the images stored on the imageshack (or flickr) site, it is an easy thing to retrieve the tags/links whenever you want to include them in a post here on the forum, in either direct link or thumbnail. so if you want to create a series of images in the travel journal branch, it would be easier to load them first onto the free gallery.

good luck.

No. I've been trying. I've got 100 pics and 1 at a time is too tedius to babysit. There's got to be an easier way.

How do you link pictures from imageshack that show up as pictures, like in the Joshua tree thread, rather than thumbnails?

If it's impossible, how do you show pictures, like in the Joshua Tree thread?

flickr allows multiple uploads too, but i haven't tested it yet except for single submissions -- one disadvantage is a limit of 200 pics on their free accts.

copy the URL for "direct link", then paste it in your reply, highlight the whole address, then click the IMG tag button above the reply box.

you can find the "direct link" a little further down in the list of links that imageshack provides.

Update: we recommend http://tinypic.com/ for image hosting. Don't upload to an account; just upload each picture individually; that way, one picture won't be tied to another of yours (say, family pics).

When you upload a file on your computer, choose "message board" from the resize options.

Image

Then after it's been uploaded, you can copy and paste the IMG Code for Forums & Message Boards (what's in the second box) straight into your post. Don't bother with the IMG button above the posting box if you do this.

So... you can only post pics through this ImageShack site here??? It now tells me something like "trial over" and I should buy space?

No... really. Really bad if you can only link pics through an image hosting site that eventually becomes non-free.

Comments please.

You can use any site to store your images and link them here may like myself use photobucket and there are countless others.

Imageshack was all the rage here for a while but I think it sucks.

You can get a direct link from a Facebook photo, but that didn't seem to work here, which kind of sucks. I don't want to become a member of yet another "photo site" as they're useless.

If you're using a PC Right Click on the image and Copy URL.

Then paste that into a post and use the [img]....[/img] brackets to make the link live.

Moethebartender, but when I copy the image link from my FB, it tells me I can share that particular picture without sharing anything else from my FB pages.

Did the link still give away my identity? I didn't pay attention.

It's gone from your album but still exists on the Facebook server-there is no hiding on the internets.

I thought it showed a name somewhere on the page, but I'm not sure. I just took a quick glance at it when I clicked the link. I know less than nothing about facebook, but I know that people have complained about others going through other photos that weren't meant to be shared from facebook in the past... Maybe there's additional security now?

Anyway, just thought I'd mention it. There are some pretty creepy/stalky people here... I've had some people try to dig up real life info on me (hi Eric! hi Candy!). It's probably best avoided; you never know what these freaks might have in mind.

Thanks, Moethebartender. I don't mind sharing pics I choose to share, but what really makes me angry this time is that: I gave a link to a picture in one of my FB albums here, then I removed the picture. When I'd done that, I could not see the picture anymore by clicking on MY link here (which is what I wanted) BUT it still shows in Bill Barilko's post. That's just fucked up, if he's linked it to the same source. I've asked the moderators to remove both my own post and Bill Barilko's, the one that's still showing my picture. It's kind of funny: I don't mind showing my picture, but I DO want to be in control of MY pictures (I have copyright, too). Luckily I have the money and resources to take legal action if needed.

Imageshack has started charging for hosting new pictures.

I use Tinypic.

If you don't want location info on your pics, the safest way for any photo source is not have it on the source pic. If you take it with a camera that doesn't have GPS, you're already fine. If you take it from a smartphone, either turn location services/GPS off before taking the picture, or strip it using third party software that's available here and there. THEN upload to a site.

Is there some good anonymous quick upload app?

I've not found anything as easy as Tapatalk. Unless you want to see a poll, there's really no reason to use anything other than Tapatalk for the stew, anyway. I like that you can see the first few lines of OP as well as the title.
