Nootka Sound & Environs Report

Post by Bill Barilko » Sat Jul 21, 2018 2:13 pm

Fished July 16, 17 & 18 mostly around Maquinna and the wash rock near there.

Day One-quite slow over all a few small Hali in the blazing sun.

Day Two-unbelievable bite Coho & Springs both in the same area-amazing numbers of Humpbacks feeding heavily on super abundant small bait a whale show for the ages/never to be forgotten-had at least a dozen double headers and non-stop action all morning into the afternoon until tide change.

Ran across schools of super fat hatchery Coho and very few wild.

Day Three-good bite early again both Coho & small Springs then just scratching but left early for the drive back.

Overall if bait was money we'd all be billionaires Nootka is a gorgeous spot like I remember but Spring sizes were down and the inside a ghost town.

Key Words-small hootchies especially Army Truck & White, Tom Mac & Wonderbread spoons.

Was lucky to see the Elk herd on the Tree to Sea-have a pic but it was taken with a Potato in the pre-dawn darkness.

And Guess What?!

I got my first ever free ride on BC Ferries! (Me not the truck)

Excuse my photography as you can see these are shots grabbed while underway and those red blobs in the last pic are the Elk herd.

Bill,

Thanks. Looks like a beautiful setting and some nice fishing.

How can you tell that the coho is hatchery (other than them being fat and the envy of other cohos?)

and

Why the fuck did you not post pictures of the humpbacks instead of triplicates of motor boat wakes?? I PROTEST!

Hatchery raised salmon have their adipose fin removed before release. That's the little fin between the dorsal and the tail.

Each and every hatchling?? That's interesting. Why do they do that? Is there some need to tell hatchery fish from wild? I guess they might want to know aprox how many survive and are healthy?

I think they clip them all. I believe the idea is to protect the wild fisheries that are deemed to be in decline.

For instance, you must release any wild salmon or steelhead on the entire Columbia River. Only hatchery fish are allowed to be kept.

The fish that Bill is wrestling with is wild. You can see the adipose.

That's not me and it's a small Chinook he's holding.

I don't take pictures of Whales much they all look pretty much the same/require too much energy to portray properly.
