Honghe Hani Rice Terraces in Yunnan, China

Post by Steve_in_Exile » Fri Mar 16, 2018 4:20 am

The Honghe Hani rice terraces is a Unesco World Heritage site in southern Yunnan with a history of continual use spanning about 1,300 years. Water channeled from high mountain peaks feeds into about one million acres of terraces, which are used in an ancient integrated farming system involving rice, fish, eels, ducks, and pigs. One of the coolest sites I've been to in recent years...

Amazing and great photos.

The place is a bit of a Mecca for photographers, especially in the winter when the terraces are full of water, as the water reflects the sunlight and the individual ponds turn various colors, including red, depending on what type of algae they have growing in them. Check out google images for "Honghe rice terraces". My pictures didn't really do the place justice. Here are a couple off google images...

A screenshot from Google Earth gives some idea of how extensive this place is. These terraces cover whole mountain sides and go on for miles.

They're all green when they have rice growing in them.

The highest peaks I saw up close were around 20,000 feet. I made it to Shangrila, which I think is around 12,000 feet with surrounding peaks around 20,000.
