Cyprus Lake, Bruce Peninsula

Post by snowgirl » Thu Jun 22, 2017 8:44 pm

I love camping but without a car it's challenging to get out of the city. Recently I said, fuckit, booked a campsite and a rental car, and went camping. Cyprus Lake is one of only two national parks in Ontario and because it's Canada's 150 birthday, national parks are free. This one is right adjacent to the Bruce Trail, an 890km long trail in southern Ontario. There are also lots of side trails and loops you can hike.

My campsite. I wisely rigged up a tarp over my tent because it poured rain the first night and again early morning of the last night.

This is a classic view of Georgian Bay from the trail:

This part of the Bruce Trail is challenging. I kept feeling like I was a hobbit.

But there were benefits. I will add that Georgian Bay is freezing in June.

This is the Lake Huron side of the peninsula. Very different.

Also the Lake Huron side. There is water out there somewhere. Much warmer, too, no surprise.

I also took a ton of flower pictures. I've never been north in June because it's usually very buggy but the June wildflowers are spectacular. This one is my favourite, the Lady's Slipper. They were everywhere.

Nice pictures. Your table has tipped over and is about to catch on fire.

Haha, Stan. Ploar is right, it's my campfire grill. I just tipped it back so I could enjoy the fire better.

Looks nice, I love the flowers. How are the mosquitoes and biting flies around there this time of year?

I expected Bugpocalypse but it wasn't bad. There were a couple of sections of trail that were down near the water on boulder beaches that were dreadful for black flies. I had to practically run on boulders, waving my sunhat around my legs to keep hordes of them from settling. I'm sure it must looked amusing but with a sprained ankle I was not happy. The mosquitoes were there, same as always.

So nice! And you never regret actually getting out and doing stuff like that.

Well, unless it rains the entire time or you run into a bear and are too afraid to sleep at night.
I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it.

I don't think I have yet wished you all a happy birthday. Happy birthday, youngsters.

Nice pics SG
I was in a prov. park in Manitoba a few weeks ago, also expecting to be eaten alive, but came home with only 4 mosquito bites.
The only critters out in force were the caterpillars.
I'm going to the back seat of my car, with the woman I love, and I won't be back for ten minutes!

The wildflower picts remind me of my wife. She loves taking wildflower picts and spend a great deal of time doing so. She always wants the perfect picture, which she eventually gets. I need to learn to carry a book with me to ready when she spots a new wildflower.

Nice pebbly beach!

Was that a proper campsite? Were there facilities? It looks pretty wild.

The beach was terrible, obvs. The only reason I was able to stay was because I found a flat rock to sit on.

Yes, Klara, the national parks tend to be well serviced. There was a water tap one site over from me by the road, and compost toilets and a sink about six campsites away. A quick walk. But I picked a good site so it was pretty secluded.

Nice photos. Real vanilla extract will keep the bugs away.
