Some good humor/gibes from the defectors:

"But the crowd was rather disappointed to see Kim Il Sung emerge, who was only in his 30s at the time and looked like a Chinese food delivery guy."

Thanks for posting.

Pathetic to the tenth degree:

"When the supply of pebbles for construction sites reaches a low, then the government orders the people to provide more," says Han Song Chol. "Without having many options, the elders or children would go to the riverbank and collect pebbles."

Looks like a country full of malnourished people waiting to die as soon as possible.

I probably should have titled it Pyongyang Gallery since there's not much else on show.

There are some Youtube vids taken from passenger rail cars that show more of the countryside you can see how much of their own food they grow.

Laos has a pathetic alliance with NK.

You can go to one of those crappy overpriced North Korean restaurants where the performers do Kim Il song and dance routines. They work at the embassy. The restaurant is their sole means of support.

All of the communist statues (the ones they've left up) come from NK.

Much mirth is made of a the people's struggle statue in front of the Military Museum. The struggling people appear to be wearing Nikes.

Bootleg Nikes, one hopes. Stick it to the man.

Here's a pic:

Me too. Nothing to Envy is a great book. Seven defectors tell their stories. Bizarre stories one and all. In one case, a girl recounts how her father was the head party hancho in her apartment building and would invite all the neighbors over to watch his TV at night. They would all get plastered on some sort of corn homebrew. Anyway, one night her father, tipsy as usual, saw the dear leader on TV and pointed out that he was short. He thought that was funny. The next day, one of their neighbors reported him to the secret police, and her father spent two years in a labor camp.

Camp 14 is also a good book & documentary about Shin Dong-hyuk, the only person to every escape from a concentration camp. He was born in the camp.

There's also a great diary by a Brit who got a job editing for the NK news in the 1970s. He recounts his spiral into alcoholism and his affair with a female Chinese diplomat. You can read it online.
