Sicily report

Post by snowgirl » Thu Nov 03, 2016 9:58 pm

Went to Sicily (and Naples and Rome) from Oct. 6-22 with the family.

My sister and SIL in the market in Catania
Image

I was with my 76yo mom so we didn't try for the crater but we hiked around on Mt. Etna. We were also woefully unprepared (those are rented jackets)
Image

A house that didn't make it in one of the eruptions. I took this pic from the bus.
Image

The Roman amphitheatre in Catania.
Image

We loved Ortigia in Syracusa.
Image

The Latomie caves were very cool.
Image

And we went swimming!
Image

Then my sis and SIL went home and mom and I went to Taormina. The Roman amphitheatre.
Image

We climbed a million stairs to this grotto above Taormina
Image

Then kept climbing to Castelmola
Image

We took the train to Naples and they put the train on a ferry to get across the Straits of Messina!
Image

I took approximately a million photos at Pompeii. I'll spare you and only post one.

Napoli

And then we went to Rome. Me with St. Peter's behind me.

Nice photos. I was last in those places when I was 16, so it was good to be reminded of them.
And that's a great photo of you in Rome!

Would bang!

It had to be done.

Rome was my most favourite holiday of recent times.

I am considering just focusing all my holidays on one place, such as Italy, learning the language and food gradually over time.

Great photos!

I particularly liked the one taken in Pompeii, so if you want to do a Pompeii thread I'd be glad to see more.
I enjoy reading NorthAmerican's posts. So well-written and interesting except for the dull parts.--Nines

Thanks, all!

Bill, you would have gone bonkers for the fish in Sicily. Sooo fresh and prepared really simply. I think the best meal I had was in a little town called Marina di Palma, only one restaurant was still open as it was off season. They just served a perfectly cooked whole orata, pan fried, and a salad of iceberg lettuce with the most fragrant olive oil on it. Amazing.

LS, I've never had pink hair! Are trying to start rumours?

Stephan, I love Rome. I would love to stay there for three weeks or a month. There's so much to see and so much good food everywhere.

NA. I'll consider starting a Pompeii thread but my camera isn't great and all the photos end up looking kind of the same. But others might have good Pompeii pics so maybe I will.

Lovely pics and are those original colours in Pompei or part of an ongoing restoration? Fascinating none the less but fascinating if they are able to bring out the original dyes after all these years. I've always wanted to go to Pompeii for some reason it just is one of the places since I was kid I've wanted to visit.

Hey Seamus, I just started reading a book by the great classics historian Mary Beard called The Fires of Vesuvius: Pompeii Lost and Found. I've just started it but she mentions how much of the town has been restored by archeologists, and how being exposed to the elements has badly faded the original artwork they have found on the site. So I think some of the colour is original but some of it has been restored. A better place to see the art is in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples. Back in the day, archeologists and treasure hunters prised mosaics and things off the walls, which is kind of heartbreaking except it means they have been preserved better than the pieces left there. An absolutely fascinating place.

Lovely pics, Snowgirl!

I'm a massive fan of Sicily, but I found Rome exhausting. Don't get me wrong, bits of it are absolutely beautiful and there's so much great food everywhere, but I had a hard time coping with such huge masses of tourists all over the place.
My trip started with an eartquake on Sunday morning, and consequently with the metro shutting down for half a day, which didn't help the situation at all. I only had to take one bus, but it was quite an experience.
My kid and I still had loads of fun, but we didn't do everything I planned on doing. We took it very easy and spent the afternoons picnicking and segwaying at Villa Borghese, and the evenings eating and drinking in our fairly quiet neighbourhood.

I might post some pics a bit later.

Thanks, Chip. I kept looking back thruogh the pictures to find the one of her mother.

Looking good, snowgirl.

Can I be VinnyD for a minute and pick a nit? That is not an amphiteater; that is a theater. A theater is used for drama and is semicircular (or not quite a full half-circle) , usually on a hillside. The Greeks always seem to have placed them so that the audience would have great views along with the view of the stage.

An amphitheater is used for sporting events and has the audience all around. Often with long straight sides and curved at each end, but the Coliseum in Rome is an amphitheater and is pretty much circular, I think. Amphitheaters can be and usually are bigger than theaters since you don't need to hear anything, just see it.

It took me a while to figure that out myself.

They used to put rail cars on a ferry to get to Copenhagen from the mainland. I don't know if that is still the case.

I checked. The railway cars still go on the Copenhagen ferry.

When you take the bus from Venice to Chioggia (or vice versa), the bus goes on the ferry, but that is not as interesting.

Thanks, Vinny. That's actually helpful.

Cummy, they still stage productions at the theatre in Taormina but only in the summer. I would love to hear some opera there. Or anything else, really.

I will try.

Above the first of the two pictures you said "I was with my mom" and Nines kind of assumed that that meant that the picture would be of your mother. And because of the down jacket you seem to be packing a few more pounds than in the picture in Rome. Also the Sicily picture is in sunglasses so a fair amount of your face is invisible.

But basically it is just an example of how people will believe a preconceived notion (that the picture below "I was with my mom" would be of your mother) no matter what the evidence.

In any case, Nines is right about one thing: you have a lovely smile.
