C !

Post by Electrolyte » Sun Sep 25, 2016 2:46 am

I just reserved a ticket to Ghana, which will be #100!

Yes, I'm counting the Vatican and Monte Carlo, as well as my home country. I'm not counting Transnistria as a separate country. I've been to Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Czechoslovakia, but I'm counting that as 2. Landing at an airport and not clearing customs doesn't count.

Here's the list:

US, Canada

Central America -- Mexico, Belize, Guatemala

Caribbean -- Antigua, Bahamas, Bermuda, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico

South America -- Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay,

Asia -- Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong (1992), India, Indonesia, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Taiwan, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Vietnam

Middle East -- Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, UAE, West Bank and Gaza, Yemen

Europe -- Austria, Belgium, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey (I think I also stepped into Iran then, but I'm not counting that.)

... Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovak Republic, Ukraine, Yugoslavia/Serbia (Belgrade in 1988).

Africa -- Algeria, Djibouti, Egypt, Mauritania, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia

... Burkina Faso, CAR, Chad, Comoros, Cote d'Ivoire, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritius, Mozambique, R of Congo, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe

Small --- Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican

The most exotic and one of the friendliest was Yemen. Too bad about what's happening there.

I came close to going about 10 years ago. Wish it had happened. But glad I saw Yemen and I got to go all over Egypt before it was too late.

dbrother, the Republic of Ireland is a separate country from the United Kingdom, and has been since the 1920s.

2004. Only went to Khartoum. It was pleasant, but not a must see destination. There's probably good stuff to see outside of the city, but it wasn't a good time to tour around.

And it was hot!

yeah, i get that vinny, that is why I said that all counts as a minimum of two countries, the question really was do you count england, scotland and wales as separate national entitys.. therefore making that all a total of four? or is it just UK and Eire.?

Congrats on reaching 100 ! thats some serious travelling.

By my list you already got there ages ago...the Travel Century Club has UAE as 7 separate countries...which gets that count up

I'm on 94.

As far as i know there are only 2 stewbies who have reached that goal....Soda (Sadly passed away) and 5Waldos.

You might be younger than me, so I might be like the 400 meter runner who only looks like he's ahead because of the curve in the track.

I've only been to two of the seven Emirates, but I've been to Hawaii, which counts separately from the mainland US, as does mainland Turkey separately from Istanbul. There are at least four extra countries that I have according to the CC.

It has been a great privilege, one that we might have been unlikely to experience if we had not been born during a particularly advantageous window in history, not to mention other fortunate circumstances such as (ok, I'm assuming about you) where we were born and the people we have been around.

If you were going to count Scotland and Wales, why wouldn't you count Northern Ireland? But clearly Northern Ireland is not a country. Therefore neither are Scotland and Wales. QED.

The United Kingdom (UK) comprises four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Maybe a good measure is UN members, in which case I still have 3 to go. Doesn't seem right to exclude Taiwan, though.

In 1990-92 I visited Hong Kong and China, as well as the east and west of Czechoslovakia (e.g. Czech Republic and Slovakia, but they were one country). How many countries would I get credit for today? (I say 2 for HK and China and 1 for Czechoslovakia.)

Burma? You mean Myanmar?

I could have gone into Gaza but didn't have the balls. I had a car, which could have been damaged.

Nepal is a gaping hole in my list.

Apparently folks around Yangon prefer the name Burma, while folks further north prefer Myanmar.

I heard the same thing, but would have been interested just to know what it looks like when I read the news.

I wasn't being terribly serious, but thanks for the interesting link.

Also I'll be in Thailand next month and the tips on that thread might have been useful, though I've been before and I think we're going to do alright (Ayutthaya, Siem Reap, Chiang Mai, Krabi/Railay, and Bangkok).
