my summer vacation

Post by avalon_ » Sun Sep 01, 2019 2:16 am

I was away from home almost the entire summer. After a tough year of loss, I really needed to keep really active, stay outdoors, be in nature, and connect with friends and family. All while road tripping solo and staying brave without my trusty pup to accompany me.

I started out in Utah and did some hiking in the south. I hiked through a slot canyon for the first time. The water was ICE cold. Notice my sexy neoprene socks.

Then I headed to Park City and met up with a friend. More hiking, paddling, etc... My airbnb was in the perfect location. It was walking distance to restaurants and hiking trails.

Next, I headed to SLC to pick up Flatfoot. With tents in tow, we headed off to adult camp. It was more fun than I could have predicted. Maybe one of the funnest things I've done. We did outdoor activities and took classes all day, then we enjoyed booze, weed, music, smores, and dancing in the evening. We made friends with a good group the first night we arrived. One of the best things I tried was rock climbing.

I was planning on heading to Idaho, to visit some other friends and do some more camping. Unfortunately, my mom's husband had a heart attack so I headed home for a bit to help out. He's doing ok now, and the trip ended up being a good one. It was 4th of July week and a lot of my childhood friends were home and I got to reconnect with them.
Image

Once I realized all was well at home, I got that mountain itch again so I headed to the Sierra Nevada Mountains. This was my stomping grounds with Abby, so of course a few (ok many) tears were shed but overall I did ok. I did a few hikes I would never take her on, and I did some of her favorites. I met up with friends and made a couple new ones. Mostly I hiked on my own and I'm trying to learn more about safety out there by yourself. I'll try to put some of those things in practice next summer or whenever I hit the mountains again for long solo hikes.

Enjoying some hot springs.

Some more camping...

Nothing to see here. Just a bear cruising through.

Mornings on the lake were glorious and private.

Just some hikes...

I even tried to buy a second home this summer. It didn't work out and fell out of escrow this week. This would have been my view.

Since I loved climbing so much when I was in Utah, I thought I would try it out again in California. Can you spot me way the hell up there?

I came back to San Diego for a couple days and enjoyed an art exhibit that comes here every summer. That giant orb changes color and design when you move your hand.

I needed more mountains so I headed to Colorado. Plumsole met me for dinner, which was wonderful. I did some more hikes.

Flatfoot needed more mountains too, so he came out and we went to a folk music festival near Boulder. You know when everything just works out perfectly? This was one of those weekends. We made more friends, enjoyed music, hikes, and even saw some mountain goats.

This river runs along the music venue, so when you're hot you can just wade or take a dip.

Those are some awesome pics. That view would have been great, sorry the 2nd home fell through. Looks like a pretty good summer overall though.

Thanks. Yeah, the inspection revealed too much wrong with it. I was already maxed out on the price, so the fixing up would have done me in.

I just want people to know that I have a normal left arm, not an underdeveloped one like in the photo.

Wow you packed a lot in this summer. Rock climbing is fun, and quite a workout. That California pitch looks pretty tough.

That's too bad about the second home falling through.

It was really stressing me out. I knew the place was outdated, but it had really been neglected. Lots of things out of code. It needed a new fireplace, water heater, electrical panel, outlets, on and on and on.
That California pitch looks pretty tough.
For me it was! It was over 100ft. I've gone to the rock climbing gym since I've been back, but it's just not as fun.

That looks like an absolutely perfect summer to me, avalon (minus the heart attack and the house falling through).

I managed to get Mr_S to do one glorious hike with me, and 3 or 4 very pretty walks, and a couple nice bike rides - but that is his fill of mountains, while I was just getting started.

It was great. You could mountain bike, kayak, climb, hike, take classes in outdoor cooking, outdoor first aid, slack lining, fly fishing. The list goes on.

Scrubb, come join me next summer for more!

Pez, and anyone else who is interested, join me in Mammoth sometime. I've been going there steadily for the past 10 years and know it pretty well.

Now I'm itching to get back to southern Utah this fall. I'd like to take a trip to some places I haven't been like Arches, and Capitol Reef. Anyone want to join Thanksgiving week?

This confirms I could travel with you two (though whether you could stand me would be another issue)>

I want to go to adult camp! There's actually a yoga camp here that does similar activities, but this year was not the year for me to do it.

Loved the photo series-thanks for sharing.

Tru, come travel with us!

I've seen a yoga camp advertised around here too. Well, in southern California. I think it's in Santa Barbara. I can't remember now.
