Weather in Southern Africa end of Dec

Post by ceylon_tea » Sun Jan 06, 2019 3:53 am

What’s the weather like in Botswana and Zimbabwe in end of December. I’m thinking of doing this overland trip. It’s mostly camping. Image
Would it be too rainy for camping?

Hot, but with high likelihood of heavy rain.

In Joburg it was 40C on Boxing day. A few days later the heavens opened. It's been raining heavily ever since.

I've spent a number of Christmases in Zimbabwe when it was constant torrential rain. Height if the rainy season, but also extremely hot.

From what little I know (many others know better than I do) wildlife viewing is better during the dry season as it tends to concentrate the animals more around the waterholes. Of course when we were in Namibia in July is also got fairly chilly at night.

I was in Zambia and Botswana a the end of the rainy season in May. It was still very green and water wa plentiful. It made animal viewing a bit more difficult. Aside for poor visibility, many of the park roads are not drivable. Te water flow at Victoria Falls was massive as opposed ot a trickle in the heart of the dry season

I was in South Africa and Mozambique in April. The weather was perfect. May be I can do this trip in March? I want to do this trip in the winter/start of spring (in the northern hemisphere)

I was in Zimbabwe from Oct-Dec. October and most of November were fantastic weather - hot, but not unbearable, amazing wildlife viewing. By the time I left, it was raining almost constantly.
