Best locations to celebrate Christmas

Post by Gogo » Tue Dec 25, 2018 9:44 pm

2020 is going to be a big family reunion type of Christmas celebration held where we live, so we are thinking about traveling somewhere for Christmas in 2019. Usually, we would just pick some place warm and go there, but now we are thinking about going somewhere where Christmas is a big deal to revel in the Culture.

What are some places where Christmas is a Big Deal/interesting/festive?

Christmas day itself can be tricky where it's celebrated, b/c everything shuts down and people are home with family.

The lead up to Christmas? The lights and all are really pretty in Lisbon, and it's not too cold. German markets? NYC?

My favorite Christmas was in Chefchaouen, but I don't care much for the holiday. I was in Brussels for Christmas a few years ago, and they make a big deal of it around Grand'Place. I imagine Germany would be good too.

Tucson at Christmas is Hell for us. The last time we were there had to go to 5 Christmas dinners.

I was thinking about something like Germany for the markets, that sort of thing. Flying into either Madrid or Lisbon and looping through southern Spain, something like that might work.

Some places in Mexico go all out, too.

Actually, the Asian "slant" on Christmas is...uh, interesting--China et al.

Still can't get into Christmas in Oz too heavily; it's just wrong sweating your fucking ass off in the heat and humidity.
Scrubb makes note of my Stew and Thorn Tree posting history: I had no issues with what you said, the problem was that I couldn't figure out what it was (you said).

Maybe you could do a house swap, or a housesit/petsit arrangement.
