Do you enjoy the airport experience?

Post by Lincoln » Mon Dec 17, 2018 5:39 am

In general do you enjoy being in an airport?

Obviously it's no one's choice for a day out but seeing as you have to go through it do you try to make the best of it and perhaps even enjoy it?

I'm sat here at London Stansted and it's rammed full at 4.45...80% look miserable but there are 20% that actually look like they're having a decent time.

Ill never understand people drinking alcohol at this time of the morning but there's 40 or so people chugging ale for breakfast...I just don't get that?...my dad and his chav wife are those people and I kind of understand his mindset...for him his holiday starts when he's checked in and gone through security...each to their own but sipping beer at 4am makes no sense.

I used to do airport lounges but now they've become a rip off lately as they've been losing profit due to passengers drinking them dry.

I like to arrive early, sit down, have a coffee, have a free spray of expensive aftershave and sit and watch the world go by...so many fit women fly out of stansted!

What about you? Do you hate airports?...do you turn up at the last minute to minimise the experience?

Yes, when I am flying private or charter.

The experience is like night vs. day compared to the hoi polloi experience.

Meh. All languages are chock full of article incorporations of foreign words into new words in the local lingo.

Have a gander at the 'al' section of a Spanish dictionary if you doubt me.

But it goes way beyond that. "Na' means river in central Alaska Athabaskan. So you get names like Nena, Tana, and after a few more rivers join: Nenana, and Tanana.

Enter the evil white man, who asks the locals what they call the local rivers, and they say Nenana or Tanana. So the white man puts 'Nenana River' on his maps, which literally means the Ne River River River. And now you know.

As long as I've got somewhere to sit and work and have a cup of coffee.
Sometimes I get more work done when I'm "zoned out" .
Sometimes I'm just queueing and all sorts of fuckery.
I've never been picked up up in an airport.

OP, try Miami Airport then. Just made it on the list of US airports that are worst ones to be delayed in over Christmas travel period.
Tomorrow will be a pain as I wait for 9 am flight. Better than the bus however.

I love Heathrow. Going there always means I'm doing something cool, and other than one horrible queue checking in for Air India I've never had a particularly bad experience there. Other airports are less cool but I still generally enjoy the experience. Unless it's Luton.

I'm also all about the early morning pint if I'm getting a morning flight. The one time work sent me to the States on an 11am flight, I had a cooked breakfast and a beer and expensed it and felt like the king of business travel. The morning pint makes it special; it reinforces the feeling that you're stepping out of normal life, if only for a few days.

The only airport that I found somewhat interesting was Narita (Tokyo) which is so big that it is like a city in and of itself. Watching the departure boards at all airports passes the time as you can see which airlines are flying where (especially good at the biggest of the big city airports like Heathrow, Los Angeles, New York JFK, etc.)

I endure airports as I endure flights. As long as nothing goes horribly wrong with either, it's not a big deal. The whole process of going to the airport and getting on a plane is rife with opportunities for shit to go wrong and for endless hassles. Less so now that I've got the TSA pre-check, but still not something I look forward to. Detroit metro isn't too bad generally, but Logan can be a fucking nightmare.

I used to love airports. They were full of anticipation and excitement for me. But I have to say that's waning a bit (and not just at Luton). Maybe I've just got spoiled with the amount of travelling I've been doing recently.

well, duhhh, of course i love airports. i usually get there super early so that i can check out aircraft, lounge hop and wander through walkways that i haven't wandered through previously. i love the vibe and feel of an airport. it's like porn, so of course you know what i mean ;)

but i like good airports - with all the amenities, bells and whistles, proper architecture, views, that are customer friendly, etc. so this pretty much rules out third world airports (and houston and newark).

The best food I had in Myanmar was at the airport. Only there did they have all the famous recipes like green tea salad that were lacking in town. Ubon, Thailand has a cafe in the airport parking lot that is famous for chicken and cashew nuts. Tokyo has the famous sushi restaurant.

New Orleans has a ton of famous Vietnamese restaurants and po boy shops near the airport. Newark Airport has The Spanish Tavern that will send a car for you. I'm a big believer in checking in the bag and getting back in a cab to go eat.

Good to know, Beatr.

I had a great burrito in Albuquerque's airport.

SFO does not allow food vendors to charge grossly inflated prices. I don't know if other airports do the same.

For a super Thai Maximalist interior, this place is 2 miles away from Bangkok Airport. Like $40 with a couple of beers:

I'm going to Kuala Lumpar for some medical tourism. They too have posh for less restaurants in the outskirts. Jakarta did too.

Kuala Lumpur was amazing value for everything when we used to go there. We went nuts and stayed in 5*+ hotels and ate at places we'd never go near at home. Our kids were wide eyed at Mummy and Daddy's largesse.

love airports, always have always will, you're either at the start of some amazing journey or coming home to the comforts of home, even driving a cab my favorite trips are to and from the airport..

people that are so old and jaded that they are sick of airports are obviously sick of life itself..

Depends on the airport. Singapore, KL, Narita & Haneda, Schiphol - all good! I even like Fiumacino and Charles de Gaulle when they’re not losing my luggage, because going there is a novelty. But Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Heathrow (all terminals), meh. Flying SVO -> LHR -> LAX tomorrow, all economy of course, change of terminals from 4 to 3, on Boxing Day with drone chaos - what could possibly go wrong?

The new bits of SVO are okay.
I had to stay overnight LHR last time I was going to/from Moscow so that was OK. Premier Inn at t4.

Then lounge at t5 for the journey home.

There's no novelty about CDG for me. You can keep it.

CPH and OSL are fine hubs. ICN is OK. MAN is shit.

i like this airport experience...

(1) to be taken directly from the lufthansa airline lounge to the aircraft door and thus bypassing all of the unwashed masses.

Image

(2) to be picked up at a united gate, forced into a merc suv and be whisked away to your next gate (all via tarmac). oh yeah, and bypassing all of the unwashed masses.

Image

(3) to be picked up and/or dropped off at your airplane door. delta uses cayennes. oh yeah, and bypassing all of the unwashed masses.

Depends on the airport - I’d shit on my hands and clap than go near Stansted or Luton. If they work for you then fine but right now they’re a huge ball ache fir me.

I quite like going anywhere from Heathrow or Gatwick - and am all over a pint before flying anywhere as that’s very much part of the pre-flight routine.

Me too!

When leaving from home I always get to the airport early and have a meal and a drink or two. Sometimes even a visit to the spa.

Yes. Fort Lauderdale is pretty good for sleeping over in, comfy chairs you can stretch out on, near the car rentals. It was chaos in the check in area, though.

My latest experience, at Bali, Denpasar, was overall fine, Arrived 1.30 am, the taxi guys are all over you, but, when they realised I wasn't leaving, they moved on to others. Found a comfy settee, and a stall manned by a very hospitable, local guy, giving away free tea and coffee. Also met Adam, from Perth, there. He was asleep on the other couch when I arrived, woke not long after, went over and helped hinself to tea. He'd really made himself at home. Didn't know what the nice stall guy was selling, either. Certainly, nothing to us.

At sunrise we walked together to Kuta. Lovely walk, best time to experience Kuta.

Two hours to get out of LAX yesterday. The passport ESTA check is automatic and quick, the bags were fast, all was good, and then we started queueing - for an hour - to get through the customs/ homeland security queue. Jesus. (but still faster than it’s been in the past - Houston is the worst).

Transiting in Atlanta from an international flight was a breeze. Passport line was a bit long but my bag was there for me to recheck before moving onto my next flight. I was all less than an hour
