Qatar airlines this time

Post by leela » Mon Oct 08, 2018 9:53 am

I booked them to Hanoi because they were cheap and get great reviews in general. And I was really happy to discover that they don't charge for seat selection in economy, when that alone can add £100 to a four sector fare with just about everyone else.

But I've just read the reviews specific to my outward leg on a Dreamliner, and they're terrible. Hard narrow seats, very thin armrests, big AVOD boxes talking up what's already limited leg room...etc.
Is 3:4:3 normal configuration for a Dreamliner?

Sad now.

As the new panes come into circulation, most will notice the reduced leg room . I flew an aged A 340 to Johannesburg and it had more legroom thna a recent flight onad an Air Canada Dreamliner. But Qatar is a good airline at least

Leela, according to Seatguru, the Qatar 787 is 3-3-3, not 3-4-3. I wasn't aware that the 787 could be set up is a 3-4-3 which is often the econ seat configuration in a B777.
The comments you cite about the seat leads me to believe the are using the new "slimline" seats which many airlines are installing in order to jam more seats into econ. The complaints you cite are very similar to many reviews I've read about AC 787 dreamliners.

I know this deson't help you right now but when we fly longhaul economy I try to book us on B767 or A330 as econ is a 2-3-2 configuration. I find the seats in the 2-seat rows more comfortble, a little bigger and greater legroom than newer planes such as 777 and 787.

FYI, we loved Hanoi and used it as a base for hiking in Sapa region and then few nights in a junk on Halong Bay. You'll have a great time.

Oops, just realized that A330 econ is generally a 2-4-2 setup. But principal is the same.....go for the 2 seat rows.

I liked the A330 configuration of 2-4-2

You're right. I got confused with the other planes in my schedule. So basically the 787 is cramped in economy (width wise anyway) in general, unless any airlines go with 2:4:2.

Believe only All Nippon and Japan Air have 2-4-2 configuration with 787.

this is great...! love it...! cyllarus is sounding like cummy...!

yeah, it seems that the qatar/QR econ seat pitch on their 787 dreamliner is to be avoided at all costs. can you say "sardines"? in a search for flights between LHR and HAN, i see other choices on thai, emirates, etc. that have seats with a 32 inch pitch. these flights show as CHEAPER than the QR flights. what you need to so is look at the (1) seat width and (2) seat pitch before any ticket purchases. google flights tells you the seat pitch. you have to figure out the seat width yourself (use seatguru). and, do follow these 2 rules:

1) do NOT fly economy in any dreamliner. econ is pure hell with 3-3-3 seating. only japan airlines has a comfy 2-4-2 seating in econ on their 787 dreamliners. with ANA/all nippon/NH, they have mostly 3-3-3 seating now. their remaining 2-4-2 aircraft will slowly be disappearing soon.

2) do NOT fly in a boeing 777 that has 3-4-3 in econ. sadly most airlines are putting in the uncomfy 3-4-3 configs. united is rapidly switching to the bone crushing 3-4-3 configs, and we now call these UA aircraft "the SLAVESHIP configuration". yes, slaveship. that's a pretty appropriate term.

Ugh. And I was so pleased with myself for finding a cheap flight with a 5* airline.
30"? That's insane.
Ah well. It's only one leg. The other three are A330 or A380. But still. It's seven hours :(

High praise indeed but i am not even in the same league.

However, I feel I could write a novella about trials and tribulations of booking flights with points through Aeroplan with title, "Aeroplan CEOs Suck Farts out of Dead Pigeons". Have been dealing with Aeroplan since early 1990s and it just keeps going further downhill with point devaluations and astronomical fee increases. Don't understand their business model outside of screw the customer. Expect further devaluations once Air Canada and the two banks take full control.

Cummy is again right Leela....Seatguru is your friend with great info about airlines, air fleets and seat dimensions in econ/PE/Business classes.

Unfortunately I only went to seat guru after I'd booked, in order to choose my seats. In future I'll look before I book.

How did you choose your Halong bay trip? There seem to be some very dodgy cheap companies and some very expensive ones. It seems like it's going to take a lot of research to find inexpensive but safe ones.

I chose a 3 kayaking trip on Halong Bay and used Handspan. This was in 2006. It was a much smaller company back then

Just a quick heads up - there are (or at least there were) a lot of fake handspan's out there.

Thanks...you've reminded me that I read something briefly that warned about cloned names.

I'm doing an unexpected bit of paid work over the next few weeks, the proceeds of which will become the splurge fund for this trip. I suspect it might be well spent on making sure we get a reliable company for this particular bit of it. So recommendations are appreciated and will be followed up carefully.

Leela, in 2009 we booked a nice and resonably priced hotel ($65US/night) in old French Quarter of Hanoi caled The Elegance Hotel. I see thay have really jazzed up their website and changed name to La Siesta and room we had looks to be the one around $95. Lovely employees and very secure place. Anyway, we booked Halong Bay tour through them It was on Santa Maria junk and described as "luxury tour" (we had tiny ensuite bathroom) and cost $200 each for 2 nights. We were impressed and ended up booking 3-day hike in Sapa highlands through our hotel. Just the two of us plus hiking guide and it was wonderful experience.

Just remembered that Halong Bay tour included two days of kayaking between and even through some of the islands as well as a 1/2 day hike on an island (not Cat Ba) that was lovely.

That looks rather lovely, Cyllarus. I've just been browsing through the different boat tours. Thank you

I'm hoping to find one that gets a little bit off the beaten track, or at least gets to the popular places at quieter times. It seems that there are a heck of a lot of boats doing that route now. It's obviously gorgeous around there, but the photos of single boats in beautiful spots are, I suspect, far from the reality.
