Where to stay in Florence Italy

Post by Undertree » Fri Sep 21, 2018 6:43 pm

Arriving and leaving by Train. Will be doing at least one day trip. This will be after a ceramics workshop in Tuscany.

Need Hotel/B&B/VRBO/Pensione recommendations.

Between 75 and 125 Euros/night would be about right for budget.

We also stayed in a 3 Star within walking distance of the train station, and then back past the train station to get to downtown: https://www.hotelgolf.it/english/

Not sure the golf connection per se, but it worked for us!

We stumbled across this place on the walk in to town (maybe 15 or 20 minutes?). We made a point of eating there for dinner. Think we came back to the hotel to regroup after a day on the town, then walked the 10 minutes back to this place; still fond memories. Met an American gal sitting alone next to us and invited her into our fold--she was cool.

F/U. Just looked up this hotel and not sure it is any longer the same hotel that we stayed at as it is referred to as newish. And I stayed there a while ago.

A lot of acceptable 3-stars just on the town side of the Fortezza Di Basso conference centre which are walkable from the station. Just check there are no big conferences or exhibitions on.

In desperate situations, you can stay in Bologna which is 35 minutes by fast train and a great city in itself

35 minutes to Bologna?! Bloody hell that’s quick - it took me 1 1/2 days to cycle over the Appennines between the two cities...

Fiesole is also a good spot if you want to stay just out of town, with a great view.

Oops, forgot to give the name of the place: Trattoria Dall'Oste - Chianineria

That was your mistake. The train goes under the Appennines .

Not much scenery.

It has been too long since I was there to be of help but it is one of my favorite places in the world. Enjoy.

I'm not staying a 35 minute train ride away.

This is going to be the end of a week long ceramics workshop in Certaldo, after that I don't want to think about commuting to my vacation destination. That's making it like work.

Certaldo? I just checked the location - nice!! I’ve cycled near there, it’s lovely.

What time of year is the workshop? Will make a big difference on what you can afford due to hotel rate hikes / deals, so I won’t recommend a particular place in the city.

If you fancy staying outside, then it’s a 20 minute bus ride down the hill from Fiesole, which has great views to the city and is a relaxed small town with an Estruscan history. Google “fiesole view” to get an idea...

If you’re staying inside the city, it’s compact enough that I don’t really see location as being a big factor, to be honest.

What Simon said about location.

I found the one I stayed at in 2010, lovely place near the station:
http://www.hotelpalazzovecchio.it/

Still on the go, still getting good reviews, still looks economically-priced.

Some of the photos of Florence rooftops on their google site are so like ones I took that I checked to make sure they weren't ones I'd submitted.

Thanks GLimpet, look perfect, we just booked a room there for the end of October.

Back then, they had an honesty bar in reception for latecomers wanting a nightcap after being out on the town.

A few years later, on points, we stayed at the Pitti Palace hotel right near the Arno near one end of the Ponte Vecchio. Great rooftop breakfast bar but would've cost a lot more if we were paying.

Close to the train station is better for us due to Mrs.Twodogs luggage plus we want to get an early start for Siena after we visit Florence so this place sounds perfect.

Thanks again.

And I do keep looking at Fiesole as an accommodation option.

I googled it just because you said that, what a cute town! Italy is one of about 16 countries on my list as possibilities next year, so I appreciate all the tips in this thread.
